LAS VEGAS – Indiana State baseball led 5-3 in the fourth inning but Oregon scored the final five runs of the game, including three in the seventh to rally for an 8-5 win on day three of the Marucci Desert Classic in Las Vegas.
Heavy winds proved to be a major factor in the contest as Oregon used the jet stream to the tune of four home runs on the afternoon. The Ducks didn't wait long to get on the scoreboard either, connecting on a two-run homer in the first inning.
ISU (1-2) answered though with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead.
Jarrod Watkins led off the inning with a single up the middle before scoring on a wild pitch later in the inning.
Clay Dungan drew a walk and
Romero Harris singled to third with two outs, allowing
Roberto Enriquez to pick up ISU's first triple of the season as he cleared the bases.
The Sycamores added another run in the second on a sac fly before Enriquez connected on a solo home run to center in the fourth to put ISU ahead 5-3.
That was when Oregon would begin to chip away at the deficit, scoring lone runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the ball game and plating three runs in the seventh.
Gabe Mathews hit a two-run homer for Oregon (2-1) in the seventh before Jakob Goldfarb sent one over the fence a batter later.
In a staff start, lefty
Geremy Guerrero threw 2.1 innings in the start, allowing two earned runs and three hits while walking three and striking out a pair.
The Sycamores also had two bullpen players make their first appearances in Sycamore uniforms in
Jake Ridgway and
Dalton Laney. Ridgway allowed one run in 2.1 innings while Laney tossed the final 3.1 innings allowing three runs.
Enriquez was the lone Sycamore to collect multiple base hits, finishing 2-for-four with a home run, triple and three RBIs.
Parker Kelly (1-0) picked up the win for the Ducks while Laney (0-1) was charged with the loss.
The Sycamores will wrap up the Marucci Desert Classic Monday at 12 p.m. ET in Las Vegas with a rematch against host UNLV.
