Gher Ties Record as Sycamores Claim First Win

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Della Gher tied the school record in career saves and Grace Hunger drove in the go ahead run in the sixth inning as Indiana State claimed a 3-2 win over the host Chattanooga Mocs at the Chattanooga Challenge Friday evening.

Gher (1) threw only two pitches in the game but was credited with the save while Arielle Blankenship (1-0) was credited with the win after allowing no runs on two hits with two strikeouts in 2.2 innings pitched. Her sixth career save, Gher matches the six saves set by Darcy Wood (2005-09).

Indiana State (1-1) got on the board when Rebecca Gibbs drew a hit by pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the fourth. Two batters later Bailey Martin smacked a single to left, scoring Shaye Barton, the first of two times Barton would cross the plate. Martin finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Chattanooga (3-4) catcher Amanda Beltran tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with a bases loaded double down the right field line.

The Sycamores responded in the top of the sixth as Grace Hunger drove in Barton with an RBI ground out to second, pushing the final run of the game home.
