DES MOINES, Iowa -- Indiana State hit 13 3-pointers against Drake on the road in Missouri Valley Conference play but the Bulldogs countered nearly every big shot along the way as they took a 90-76 victory over the Sycamores inside the Knapp Center on Wednesday evening.
The Sycamores fell to 11-16, 6-9 MVC while Drake improved to 15-13, 9-6 MVC.
Jordan Barnes became just the sixth player in the history of the Missouri Valley Conference to record at least 100 3-pointers in a season with his six in the game to give him a total of 103. He is now tied for fourth all-time in the league. He finished the game with 26 points and extended his free throws made streak to 29.
Brenton Scott scored 22 points in the game as he went 9-of-18 in the game, inclduing four 3-pointers. He now is only 15 shy of Michael Menser's school record of 283 career 3-pointers made with 268.
Shooting was no problem for either team as ISU finished the game with a 42.7 mark from the field, hitting 27-of-63 attempts. ISU drained 13 3-pointers in the game and hit on 46.4 percent of their attempts from distance. Drake was over 50 percent in both halves as they hit 30-of-56 attempts (53.6 percent).
ISU finished the game 9-of-9 from the free throw line, marking the fourth consecutive game in which they hit at least 80 percent of their charity tosses.
Jordan Barnes got things going for the Sycamores on their second possession as he hit his 98th 3-pointer of the season. Drake countered with the game's next 11 in a row to take an eight-point lead before
Brenton Scott drained his own trifecta at the 16:45 mark to trim the Bulldog lead down to 11-6. Drake would hit each of their first four 3-pointers leading up to the first media timeout while the Sycamores were 2-of-3 from distance.
A Nick McGlynn lay-up with 9:11 left in the first half staked Drake to a 14 point lead, before Barnes drained his 100th 3-pointer to move into the Valley's all-time Top 5 for the most in a season which began a 10-0 run to trim the ISU deficit down to just 29-25. Scott added his second 3-pointer of the game and Murphy tallied a bucket in the paint at the seven minute mark to get ISU within four points. A conventional 3-point play from Drake stretched their lead out to seven points before Scott and Barnes each gave themselves four 3-pointers for the game and the Sycamores found themselves down just 32-31 with 5:33 remaining.
The Bulldogs responded with six in a row but the Sycamores got their eighth 3-pointer of the first half but the Sycamores hit their eighth 3-pointer of the opening stanza when
Demonte Ojinnaka was true from long range following a
Qiydar Davis floater which got ISU within striking distance again at 38-36 at the 2:45 mark.
Barnes finished off a spectacular first half with his fifth 3-pointer of the game and his 17th point of the first half with a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer which trimmed the Drake lead down to 46-44. Indiana State hit 10-of-16 from distance in the opening half while Drake connected on 8-of-16.
Drake had possession out of the locker room and
Brandon Murphy recorded a defensive stop and then rattled one home to knot the game at 46. Then Murphy grabbed another steal and Scott made it seven in a row for the Sycamores as they took a 48-46 lead. McGlynn would briefly give the Bulldogs a lead before Davis drained his second 3-pointer of the game at the 16:27 mark which pushed ISU into the lead at 56-54. But Drake once again provided a counter and used a 10-0 run capped by consecutive Reed Timmer 3-pointers for the 64-56 advantage with 12:57 remaining. Out of the timeout, the Sycamores came up empty on a pair of possession and Timmer made it nine in a row for himself and 13 in a row for the Bulldogs with a triple at the 11:46 mark for the 67-56 Bulldog advantage.
Clayton Hughes broke the offensive stalemate with 11:15 to go as he hit a pair of 3-pointers to get ISU within nine points. Barnes then hit his sixth 3-pointer of the game and added a free throw at the 9:55 mark to draw within 69-62.
Tyreke Key added a conventional 3-point play with 5:32 remaining with trimmed the Drake lead down to 77-69.
Reed Timmer led the way for Drake with 39 points as he hit 11-of-19 shots and 8-of-15 from long range.
Indiana State returns home for its final two home games of the regular season beginning on Saturday, February 17 when they host Southern Illinois at 2 pm (ET).
