Five Things to Know
- Newcomer Award for a Familiar Face
Tamara Lee is no stranger to the Missouri Valley Conference, spending three years at Wichita State. But as a newcomer to the Valley in Sycamore Blue, she was recognized for her average of 15.0 points per game and shot 45 percent from the field as the Sycamores rallied from a nine-point deficit for a double-overtime win at Grand Canyon. She tied a career-best 20 points in that win as Lee shot 37.5 percent from three-point range and hit all nine free throws over the weekend.
- Theft by Three
Junior Ashli O'Neal is quickly becoming one of the nation's most potent threat at takeaways as she enters this week's game ranked eighth nationally in steals per game (4.00) and 43rd nationally in total steals (16). The Cincinnati, Ohio native leads the Missouri Valley Conference in both categories.
- Queens of the Comeback
Early this season the Sycamores have found a way to win a trio of tough games after trailing at halftime. At Marshall, ISU out-scored the Thundering Herd 27-14 in the third quarter while the Sycamores used a 27-13 fourth quarter to claim the win at Saint Louis, at one point out-scoring the 2018 WNIT participants 23-9 in that quarter. The Grand Canyon comeback took a little extra time as the game went into double overtime.
- Twenty-Tree
Indiana State notched what might be a program first (easily accessible records only date back to 2003-04 season) in its double-overtime win at Grand Canyon on Nov. 23 - three players reached the 20-point mark. Not only is that a rare feat in Terre Haute (we're still searching past records to see if it has been done before), but it is a rare feat in the Valley. Current research (and it is still on-going) shows that this is a rare occurrence among Valley teams. The most recent was Drake in 2017 but the last time any other Valley team hit this mark was Bradley in 1998.
- No Home November
Due to planned renovations to the Hulman Center, Indiana State will be road warriors for the month of November this season. The Sycamores will open the 2018-19 season with five straight games away from home (four true road games and one neutral contest) and will not play a home game in the Wabash Valley until hosting IUPUI on Dec. 3. This marks the first time since the 1982-83 season that the Sycamores will not have a home game in the month of November. That year was also the last time ISU opened the year with five straight games away from home. But that also marked a different schedule in the world of college basketball. Indiana State's opener that season came on Nov. 26 and ISU played in two neutral site challenges before hosting Ball State on Dec. 7, 1982.
