Sycamores Close Season with Loss to Northern Iowa

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Laura Gross led Indiana State on her Senior Day with 12 kills while redshirt junior Cassie Kawa hit .462 with eight kills but the Sycamores were unable to dash Northern Iowa's Missouri Valley Conference Championship hopes in a 3-0 loss Saturday night at ISU Arena.
 
Set scores were 25-17, 25-17 and 25-21.
 
UNI (22-9, 16-2) claimed a share of the MVC title with the win as the Panthers were led by Karlie Taylor's 15 kills and Rachel Koop's double-double (40 assists, 13 digs).
 
The Sycamores (10-20, 3-15) hit .223 – their best team hitting percentage this month – but were unable to stop the powerful attack of a team receiving votes in the Top 25 poll.
 
Gross, the lone senior for Indiana State, fell just two digs shy of her 39th career double-double.
 
SET 1 – Northern Iowa 25, Indiana State 18
  • Northern Iowa won the first two points of the set and never trailed.
  • The Panthers led by as much as seven (20-13).
  • Laura Gross led ISU with six kills and six digs in the set.
  • Piper Thomas led UNI with six kills.
SET 2 – Northern Iowa 25, Indiana State 17
  • Cassie Kawa led ISU with four kills and hit .800 in the set.
  • Karlie Taylor led UNI with four kills and also hit .800 in the set.
  • Cassie Kawa and Rhiannon Morozoff teamed up for the only block in the set from either team.
  • The Panthers served up two aces to ISU's none.
SET 3 – Northern Iowa 25, Indiana State 21
  • UNI led 21-14 before Indiana State went on a 6-0 run to pull within one at 21-20.
  • ISU was led by Laura Gross's four kills and .333 hitting percentage.
  • Melina Tedrow recorded nine assists and six digs in the set.
  • Karlie Taylor posted nine kills for UNI.
NOTABLES
  • Indiana State dropped to 4-62 all-time against Northern Iowa. The Panthers have won seven straight in the series.
  • This is the third straight loss at home to UNI.
  • Laura Gross led ISU with 12 kills in her final match in a Sycamore uniform.
  • This match concludes the 2018 season for Indiana State.
