TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State head basketball coach
Greg Lansing announced today (Nov. 14) the signing of three student-athletes to national letters of intent. This trio will join the program in time for the 2019-20 basketball season.
Â
Signing today with the Sycamores include Cobie Barnes (Floyds Knobs, Ind./ Floyd Central HS), Jared Hankins (Indianapolis, Ind./ Lawrence Central HS) and Tre Williams (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Woodstock Academy).
"The landscape of recruiting has changed so much over the years," coach Lansing said. "We have had these guys committed for a while so we feel really comfortable about where we are at. I just want to thank our basketball staff for the outstanding job that they do in bringing in such quality players to our program."
Â
COBIE BARNES
Cobie Barnes is a 6-5, 180 guard who was named All-Hoosier Hills Conference in 2017 & 2018 at Floyd Central HS. He was tabbed an All State Supreme 15 Junior All-Star Team selection in 2018. Barnes averaged 16.1 points, 6.8 rebounds and was the team leader in steals for 24-2 team that was ranked No. 2 in the state of Indiana by MaxPreps.
"There is an awful lot to like about Cobie Barnes," coach Lansing said. "I locked in on him early and following his career. He comes from a terrific family. Cobie can do everything. He wants to be a great player here. There is no doubt that he is in the running for Indiana Mr. Basketball and certainly Indiana All-Stars. He is a very special player. I also want to thank his high school coach Todd Sturgeon, a terrific leader who spent many years with Royce Waltman and it is great to get a player from his program."
Â
His team earned the Hoosier Hills Conference Championship in a league that included No. 3 New Albany and No. 6 Jeffersonville. Barnes set a new school record of 44.7 points scored per game. He enters his senior season with 905 career points and is a two-time All-HHC selection. Barnes was selected to the Indiana Junior All-Star Team where he scored 35 points and had 15 rebounds. He had 43 points and 12 rebounds while being named MVP of the Indiana Class Basketball All Star Game.
Â
Barnes was named MVP of the Battle of the Bridges All Star Game after scoring 37 points and getting seven dunks. He was selected for the Adidas All-American Camp in July of 2018. In addition to his exploits on the court, he maintains a 3.4 GPA while taking Honors Classes in high school.
Â
JARED HANKINS
Jared Hankins is a 6-4, 185 guard and was a Lawrence North Co-Captain as a junior in 2017-18. He also was named to the 2018 Indiana Junior All-Star Team. A winner of the 2018 Lawrence North Dave Erwin Horizon Award, he also took home the Lawrence North Chris Hill Offensive Player of the Year Award as a junior.
"The history with coach Jack Keefer's program is one of the most storied in all of Indiana High School Basketball," coach Lansing commented. "Jared is just a terrific young player and should be an Indiana All-Star following this season. I remember watching him for the first time and quickly realizing just how tough he is. He sticks his nose in the mix and competes. He will fit right in with our guys. A tough competitor on the floor and a terrific person away from it."
Â
Hankins was named to the IBCA All State Underclassman Team and was a 2017-18 AP and Indianapolis Star Super Team Honorable Mention selection. He was named to the All-Marion County Honorable Mention team in 2017-18 and was selected as the February 2018 Wildcat of the Month. Hankins is a two-time Lawrence North Player of the Week Award Recipient and was the 2017 Manual Extravaganza Franciscan Health Academic Champion Award. As a sophomore Hankins won the Lawrence North 6
th Man High Energy Award and took home the 2017 Indiana Class Basketball Future All-Star Classic Most Outstanding Award.
He averaged 16.0 points per game and hit 43 percent of his 3-point field goals for power house Lawrence North.
Â
He is ranked 13
th in the state of Indiana as part of the Class of 2019. Also a well-rounded student-athlete, he has been named an Indianapolis Star Honor Roll Student (9
th through 11
th grades) and is a member of the National Honor Society.
Â
TRE WILLIAMS
Tre Williams may have been a little bit of a late bloomer in high school at Reynoldsburg, Ohio, but the 6-foot-7, 240 post player is just be scratching the surface of his potential.
Â
Williams graduated from Reynoldsburg High in the spring and decided to commit to spending the next year at Woodstock Academy in Woodstock, Connecticut.
"Tre is old school," coach Lansing said. "Bigger guys these days want to shoot from the outside, but Tre he wants to take you down low and score the basketball. He can do that in a variety of ways. He is super athletic and is a ready made college body already and he hasn't had a long time yet in a strength and conditioning program. He reminds me of
Brandon Murphy in that he is terrific leaper off of two feet. He can get you an easy basket inside or a trip to the free throw line. He plays really hard and is another good get for us."
Williams averaged 19 points and eight rebounds as a senior at Reynoldsburg. He didn't crack the varsity roster as a freshman or sophomore and began to emerge as a factor when he hit a growth spurt that took him from 6-3 to 6-7.Â
He is slated to face one of the toughest prep school schedules at Woodstock Academy. The Gold team is already 6-0 on the year after completing an impressive three game sweep this past weekend.
The Sycamores continue the 2018-19 campaign tonight, Wednesday November 14 as they host McKendree inside Hulman Center. Tip-off is set for 7 pm (ET).
