TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – At Indiana State, number 22 stands for outstanding achievement on the basketball court. From this point forward, that number will stand alongside the revered numbers 33 (Larry Bird) and 54 (Duane Klueh) as among the most revered in the Wabash Valley.
Â
Indiana State Director of Athletics
Sherard Clinkscales, alongside head basketball coaches
Greg Lansing and
Vicki Hall, announced Wednesday that the jersey number of 22 worn by the famed Carl Nicks and Melanie Boeglin will be retired.
Â
They jersey retirement ceremonies, all part of the larger Alumni Weekend festivities, will take place in February. Nicks will have his No. 22 retired prior to the Sycamore Basketball game against Southern Illinois on Feb. 16, 2019 while Boeglin's retirement will come on Feb. 15 when the women's program hosts Loyola Chicago.
Â
Boeglin not only gets the privilege of having her No. 22 jersey retired but also will claim the added honor of being the first Sycamore woman to have her jersey to hang in the rafters of Hulman Center.
Â
"I am beyond humbled and thankful to everyone at Indiana State for this incredible honor," Boeglin said. "Throughout my playing career at Indiana State I was blessed with tremendous teammates, encouraging coaches, a supportive University, and a community that embraced women's basketball which all helped make our team one of the most successful in the history of the program. To be recognized with the retirement of my jersey is a huge honor and the pride I feel in this honor is difficult to put into words. I am so excited for the opportunity to receive this honor and to have my family, who were my biggest supporters throughout my career, get to see my jersey in the rafters for years to come."
Â
Named to the Missouri Valley Conference's 25
th Anniversary Team last season, Boeglin was a 2006 All-American, a four-time All-Missouri Valley Conference honoree while also receiving the league's Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors and was a three-time all-tournament team honoree.
Â
"When you talk about the tradition of winning within the Sycamore Women's Basketball program, Melanie Boeglin is often one of the first names that comes to mind," Clinkscales said. "I am so proud that we get to honor her as the first Sycamore woman to have her jersey number retired. Whenever I see Melanie, it reminds me of what ISU Women's basketball should be. Her talent, work ethic and competitive resiliency propelled our program to new heights. Getting to know Melanie and her family has been a pure joy. This is a well-deserved honor."
Â
Boeglin was a standout player for Indiana State from 2002 to 2006 and received numerous national and MVC honors during her playing career. She was the first athlete in the history of the MVC to win the Jackie Stiles Player of the Year award and the Prairie Farms Women's Basketball Scholar Athlete of the Year award in the same season, both coming in 2006.
Â
"It is a profound moment for Indiana State Women's Basketball and I am so pleased that we get to retire Melanie Boeglin's jersey. Her ability to dominate the court on both the offensive and defensive ends set her apart from everyone else in the Missouri Valley Conference," said Hall. "Her ability and tenacity on the court is what we strive for in our program today. Our hometown hero, to this day, still holds 10 school records and remains the only player in Valley history to be named Player and Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the same season. She accomplished so much and we are so proud that her name and number will forever hang in the Hulman Center."
Â
She was also named to several All-American teams in 2006 including honorable mention on the Women's Basketball Coaches Association/Kodak All-American Team, honorable mention on the Associated Press All-American Team, and third team on The Sporting News All-American Team. She was also named a First Team Academic All-American by ESPN the Magazine and the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA).
Â
She still holds numerous Indiana State records including career steals (436), career assists (685), career games played (124), career free throws made (576), points scored in a season (600 in 2005-06), free throws made in a season (166 in 2005-2006), assists in a season (237 in 2005-2006), steals in a season (123 in 2004-2005), points scored in game (46 against Drake on Jan. 26, 2006), and field goals made in a game (19 against Drake on Jan. 26, 2006).
Â
Boeglin was the 2005 MVC Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the All-Defensive Team and All-Conference Team all four years at Indiana State. She was also named to the 2003 MVC All-Freshman Team and was selected as the MVC Player of the Week nine times.
Â
During her Sycamore career, Indiana State posted an 88-36 record, won or finished second in the MVC regular season three times, and participated in the Women's National Invitation Tournament three times.
