Late Bradley Run Stymies Sycamore Second Half Rally

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State battled back from an early deficit to take a lead midway through the second half before a late Bradley run tilted today's Missouri Valley Conference contest in favor of the Braves by the score of 81-73 in front of 4,516 fans inside Hulman Center.

The Sycamores fell to 10-12, 5-5 MVC while Bradley improved to 16-7, 6-4 MVC.

Jordan Barnes led the way for the Sycamores with 19 points as he nailed four 3-point field goals to give him 85 for the year to stay up with the national leaders from distance. He continues to move closer to Michael Menser's school record of 92 trifectas set during his senior year of 2000-01. Barnes added five assists and four steals while playing in 39 minutes.

Brenton Scott continued solid MVC play as he recorded 17 points and led the team with six rebounds while added four assists. He now has 254 career 3-pointers which puts him just 29 trifectas away from Menser's career record of 283. He also now owns 1,644 career points scored and is 28 away from tying Butch Wade for fourth on the ISU all-time scoring list.

Qiydar Davis added 10 points and led the way with five steals. ISU owned 11 steals in the game and forced 19 Bradley turnovers which were converted in 14 points. In a rare occurrence, the Sycamores dropped the game despite the starting five scoring more than that of the Braves starters. The Braves owned a 34-27 edge on the glass and hit 11 3-pointers in the contest.

Scott's first trifecta came with 16:43 left in the first half to run the Sycamores ahead 7-4. Leading 9-6, the Braves would score eight in a row taking a 14-9 advantage with 13:49 left before the half. A trifecta from Bradley's Jayden Hodgson at the 4:32 mark staked the Braves to a 29-20 lead and they led by that margin twice more in the opening stanza including with 3:04 on the clock when Lautier-Ogunleye drove in for a lay-up for the 36-27 advantage.

The Sycamores hung in there and countered with consecutive trifectas by Clayton Hughes and then Barnes to cut the Braves' lead down to 36-33 with a minute and a half to go. That would be the only scoring for the remainder of the half.

Bradley would score the first four points of the second half as they took a 41-33 edge at the 18:02 mark before Davis countered with a 3-pointer to trim the Braves lead down to just five points. Barnes scored again from distance at the 17:06 mark to once again trim the Bradley lead down to just three points at 42-39. Five in a row from the Braves regained an eight-point edge before Rickman scored inside and then Scott threw in a 3-pointer to make it 47-44 with 14:14 to go.

A dunk by Donte Thomas with 12:43 pushed the Braves ahead by four points at the 49-45 but it would be their only field goal for a four minute stretch while allowed the Sycamores to make their move. Barnes hit from long distance to get the Sycamores within a point and then Scott drained a long jumper at the death of the shot clock with 11:12 remaining which pushed ISU ahead 50-49. Rickman kept the run going with a lay-up off the feed from Scott to push the lead out to three and then a steal and conventional 3-point play on the fast break with 9:24 to go gave the Sycamores a 55-49 lead and cap a 10-0 run.

Scott's charity toss with 5:57 remaining gave the Sycamores a 62-56 lead before the Braves scored eight of the game's next 10 points to knot the game for the third time at 64 on a Lautier-Ogunleye jumper as the clock ticked under the four minute mark. Back-to-back 3-pointers from reserve Nate Kennell pushed the Bradley lead out to 70-64. A pair of Brandon Murphy free throws with 1:47 remaining got the Sycamores within a possession at 70-68 but Thomas had the answer with a jumper at the 1:30 mark to push the Braves ahead 72-68.

The Braves then got a third late game trifecta from Kennell with 47 seconds to go which pushed the advantage out to seven points before the Braves earned a 81-73 victory.

Kennell led the way for the Braves with 25 points as he drained seven 3-pointers in the contest.

Indiana State now hits the road for a pair of Missouri Valley Conference contests beginning on Wednesday, January 31 when they travel to league newcomer Valparaiso. ISU will look to secure its first Valley sweep of the season when the two teams tip-off beginning at 8 pm (ET) live on The Valley On ESPN3.
