IOWA CITY, Iowa - Indiana State volleyball fell to Omaha Friday night at the Hawkeye Classic, 3-1 (25-19, 26-24, 23-25, 25-20).
Omaha (1-4) jumped out to a 7-2 which included back-to-back aces from Sydney O'Shaughnessy before
Damadj Johnson and
Laura Gross came back with consecutive kills to spark the Sycamore offense. The Sycamores would later tie the set at 13 apiece when
Sarah Peterson connected on a pair of kills. The senior finished the match with 10 kills for the first time this season en route to her first double-double of the season.
UNO would call timeout to slow the Sycamore (1-4) momentum and eventually go on to take the set 25-19. The Mavs outhit ISU.293 to .176 to open the night.
The second set was a different story for Indiana State (1-4) as ISU battled all the way to the end. The Sycamores jumped out to an early lead before UNO managed to tie it at 19. Johnson would put the Sycamores on top 22-21 with a kill before the teams traded points to 24-24. Three-straight errors would end the rally for ISU as Omaha would go into the locker room up, 2-0 after taking the set 26-24.
The third set proved to be the most efficient for Indiana State as the team hit for .333 and 15 kills. ISU jumped out to an early 10-7 lead. Omaha looked to stop the ISU charge with a pair of timeouts but it was to no avail. The Mavs did rally late but a seven-point deficit was too much to overcome as ISU went on for the 25-23 victory.
ISU carried over its momentum into the fourth set, hurrying to a 6-2 lead but Omaha put together its best defensive set in what would be the final set as they held the Sycamores to a match-low .073 hitting percentage. ISU lead 13-9 before the Mavericks scored seven-straight points to take control and they would not look back as they went on to close out the match with a 25-20 win.
Gross continued her hot streak with her third double-double on 15 kills and 17 digs. Peterson also recorded a double-double with a 10 kill - 15 dig effort. Johnson recorded 10 kills and three blocks.
Stephanie Bindernagel went for 18 digs on the defensive side of the ball while
Rachel Griffin assisted on 40 of the teams' 52 kills.
The Sycamores will continue play at the Hawkeye Classic Saturday with a pair of matches. They will begin their day at 1 p.m. with a rematch against the Mavs before taking on the host Hawkeyes at 8 p.m.
