Box Score DALLAS – Dallas Baptist shutout Indiana State for just the fourth time this season in the series finale at Horner Ballpark, 1-0 Sunday afternoon. With the win, DBU secured the series sweep over the Sycamores.
It was a pitcher's duel all the way through as offense came at a premium for both teams as MD Johnson stymied the Sycamore (18-19, 4-5 MVC) offense to a tune of just one hit in seven innings of work on the mound for the Patriots.
It wasn't until the fifth inning that either team was able to break into the scoring column as DBU (24-15, 6-3 MVC) capitalized on a Jameson Hannah leadoff walk. Hannah moved into scoring position after stealing second before moving to third on a groundout. Matt Duce would drive him in with a sharp liner up the middle.
The Sycamores struggled early on as Patriots and Johnson retired the first nine Sycamores he faced. It wasn't until the top of the fourth that Indiana State reached base after junior
Tyler Friis sent a flair to left but a double play would end any thought of a scoring opportunity.
Following a two-out walk by
Clay Dungan in the fourth, the Patriots retired the next 12 batters they saw from the ISU lineup before
Tony Rosselli broke the streak in the top of the eight on a single to the gap in left.
Jeff Zahn would put runners on the corners for the Sycamores with a two-out flair to left. The Sycamores couldn't plate the tying run though as left fielder
Kyle Moore grounded out to third to end the inning.
Friis led off the ninth with a walk but was gunned down at second on a steal attempt as Seth Elledge recorded his eighth save of the season.
Junior
Will Kincanon went six complete innings, allowing just one run in the game on six hits. The Riverside, Illinois product struck out seven batters and walked just two DBU batters. With the loss, Kincanon falls to 3-4 on the season.
Johnson (1-2) secured his first win of the season after pitching seven shutout innings and striking out seven. Austin Listi led DBU with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate including a double.
Indiana State was held to just three hits on the afternoon with Friis, Rosselli and Zahn coming up with singles. No Sycamore runner was able to move past second base in the ballgame.
The Sycamores return to action Tuesday afternoon as they travel to regional foe Eastern Illinois. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET from Charleston.
