TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State celebrated two Sycamores on Senior Day at the Hulman Center Saturday afternoon in
Rhagen Smith and
Brooklyn Artis but Evansville stole the show, downing Indiana State 52-44 to close out the regular season.
Tierra Webb and
Wendi Bibbins paced the Sycamores on the afternoon, both scoring in double-digits. Webb continued her hot shooting in the game, hitting 3-of-6 from behind the arc after going 4-for-4 Thursday to lead ISU with 13 points. Junior
Wendi Bibbins scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds in the loss.
Sullivan, Indiana native
Rhagen Smith added eight points, six rebounds and a pair of blocks in her Senior Day finale.
Indiana State (12-17, 6-12 MVC) jumped out to an early 13-8 lead after 10 minutes of action as Bibbins scored six and Artis added four for the Trees. The Purple Aces got things going quickly though in the second, outscoring the Sycamores 19-11 to take a 27-24 lead into the locker room. Both Camary Williams and Sara Dickey scored seven apiece in the quarter.
Out of the break, ISU and Evansville (13-16, 8-10 MVC) battled back and forth, each holding the opposition scoreless for long stretches. In the quarter, the Sycamores held the Aces to just 4-for-13 shooting and 1-for-4 from behind the arc.
Evansville would go on to slow down the Sycamore fourth-quarter rally by connecting on six free throws to close out the game.
Sara Dickey led the charge for Evansville in the game with 17 points including three 3-pointers. Sasha Robinson added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Robinson connected on 7-of-8 from the charity stripe with four coming in the fourth quarter alone.
Indiana State won the rebounding battle 37-34, including 12 offensive boards which turned into 12 second chance points. The Sycamores capitalized on 12 Purple Aces turnovers converting those into 16 points but poor shooting doomed ISU. Indiana State was held to 15-of-55 shooting in the game while UE shot 15-of-43, but converted 17 of their 22 free throw attempts.
The Sycamores will go into the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament beginning Thursday, March 9 as the No. 8 seed and will take on No. 9 seeded Illinois State beginning at 5 p.m. ET in the Quad Cities.
