LOUISVILLE – Indiana State Softball split yet again at Day Two of Louisville's Red & Black Tournament, taking Game One vs. Green Bay, 4-0, before falling to Bowling Green, 7-2, in the nightcap.
One inning was the difference in both games, with the Sycamores scoring all four of their runs in the bottom of the sixth to give starter
Kenzie Ihle a nice cushion for the complete-game shutout. Against Bowling Green in the evening game, the score was tied 1-1 in what was a solid pitcher's duel before the Falcons exploded for six runs in the sixth in ISU's loss.
Indiana State will wrap up at the Red & Black Tournament with one final rematch against host Louisville at 12:30 p.m. Fans can watch live on ACC Network Extra, as well as ESPN3/WatchESPN.
Game One:
Indiana State (7-5), 4
Green Bay (1-7), 0
WP: Kenzie Ihle (6-2)
LP: Katie Rossman (1-4)
Junior
Kenzie Ihle was lights-out in ISU's 4-0 victory over Wisconsin-Green Bay this morning, throwing her fourth complete game of the season and her first shutout as a Sycamore. She never allowed more than two hits in one inning, giving up a total of six while only walking two.
It all came down to the sixth inning for Indiana State, who mounted a rally at the perfect time.
Shaye Barton (1-1) started it off with a pinch-hit single, followed by a bunt-single by
Rylee Holland (1-3) to move her over to second. Another bunt single by
Becky Malchow (1-3) loaded the bases for senior
Brooke Riemenschneider, who broke the stalemate with an RBI sacrifice fly to left field.
The play of the game came on the very next batter, as
Bailey Martin cleared the bases with a three-run inside-the-park home run to seal the game for the Sycamores. It was the first-career round-tripper for Martin, a sophomore for Forsyth, Ill., and the second inside-the-park dinger for the Sycamores this season after freshman
Leslie Sims' grand slam last week at the WKU Hilltopper Spring Fling.
Game Two:
Bowling Green (8-10), 7
Indiana State (7-6), 2
WP: Meredith Miller (4-1)
LP: Kenzie Ihle (6-3)
Bowling Green and Indiana State scored one each during the first five innings in a pitcher's duel between ISU's
Kylie Stober (no-decision) and BGSU's Meredith Miller before the Falcons went off for a six-spot in the sixth to stifle a Sycamore sweep on Day Two.
Stober, who pitched four innings before
Kenzie Ihle entered in relief, allowed one unearned run in the second among five hits and two strikeouts. Offensively, four Sycamores were able to knock singles (
Leslie Sims,
Becky Malchow,
Brooke Mann and
Kassie Brown), with Malchow hitting a bases-loaded RBI single in the bottom of the seventh in ISU's late rally.
BGSU's sixth inning consisted of six earned runs on seven hits charged to Ihle, who was relieved by
Della Gher in the top of the seventh.
