TERRE HAUTE, Ind. –
Kylie Stober threw an eight-inning, two-run gem but Ball State produced in extra innings and then shut the Sycamores down to win 2-1 on Wednesday night.
Stober (1-7) threw her best game of the year for the Sycamores (15-14), yielding just two hits and zero earned runs to Ball State (18-17) in eight complete innings – the second game in less than a week in which a Sycamore pitcher has thrown eight or more innings.
Ball State took the game by advancing the runner placed on second due to international rules to third on a ground ball and then an RBI sacrifice fly by Janae Hogg.
The Sycamores were able to advance placed runner
Kassie Brown to third on an
Erika Crissman bunt in the bottom half, but the middle of ISU's order was unable to produce against closer Carolyn Wilmes.
Both teams plated one in the first inning, but neither would score again as the pitchers took control. In the top of the first, Ball State took the lead after an RBI single into the right-center gap by Danae King scored an unearned Maddy Labrador from second base. Stober allowed a double on the next batter, but it would be the last hit she gave up all game and the last baserunner she would allow for six innings.
Stober set down 15 in order from the second until the seventh, when she hit a batter and walked two, but was still able to get out of the jam.
In the bottom of the first it was
Erika Crissman who brought in leadoff hitter
Leslie Sims (1-3) on an RBI sacrifice fly to left field to tie the game 1-1. Crissman also ripped a triple into the left-center gap in the third, her second of the year and ninth of her career. On the day, Crissman was 1-2 with an RBI sac fly and a sacrifice bunt as well.
Indiana State will make its first Valley road trip of the season this weekend with a trek up to Drake for a three game series on April 1-2.
