Strong Relief Pitching and Hot Bats Power Sycamores to Series Clinching Win over Oakland, 9-5

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Senior Kyle Moore continued his tear at the plate for the Sycamores Saturday afternoon as Indiana State clinched the series with a 9-5 win over Oakland at Bob Warn Field. Along with Moore's bat, relief pitcher Triston Polley went 4.2 scoreless innings without allowing a hit en route to the win.

Moore finished just a triple away from the cycle after going 4-for-5 with a grand slam, double and a pair of singles. The Suffolk, Virginia native also scored a pair of runs for ISU.

Polley (1-1), a southpaw, came into the game in the fourth and shut down the Golden Grizzly offense and did not allow a base hit for the remainder of the game. The Avon, Indiana product struck out a season best six batters and allowed only two walks on the day.

The Sycamores (9-9) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to the bat of Dane Giesler who ripped his team-best fifth home run of the season on a two-run shot to kick things off in the first.

Oakland (1-15) answered back with a four-spot in the second to take the lead but that was when the Sycamore offense really got things going at the plate.

CJ Huntley, Jeff Zahn and Cody Gardner all reached base in the second before Moore lifted a ball out to right-center for the grand slam and ISU would never look back as they cruised to the win.

Huntley added a pair of RBIs in the fifth when he doubled home Giesler and Bifano to extend the Sycamore lead to 8-5. Gardner capped off the ISU scoring frenzy in the seventh with an RBI groundout.

Austin Conway struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth to secure the win. Sycamore starting pitcher Will Kincanon finished his day in the fourth after allowing four earned runs and striking out two. Kincanon struggled early with three walks in the first as he went for nearly 40 pitches to open the contest.

No Golden Grizzly batter recorded more than one hit, but Zach Sterry led Oakland with a home run and three RBIs. Right-hander Tyler Palm was charged with the loss after giving up eight runs in 4.1 innings.

The Sycamores will look to pick up the series sweep over Oakland Sunday at 1 p.m. at Bob Warn Field. Fans will be able to follow the game live on The Valley On ESPN3.
