CLERMONT, Fla. – Indiana State brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the seventh inning but was stymied as the Sycamores fell, 8-4, to Cleveland State on Tuesday.
After falling down 7-0 in the first four innings, the Sycamores (12-8) started to claw into the Vikings (2-20) lead down the stretch. Despite the run total, Indiana State's pitching staff had a solid day as Cleveland State took advantage of a blustery day with some deep fly balls.
The Vikings scored seven unanswered in three straight innings, beginning with a solo home run by Mackenzie Joecken (3-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) in the second inning and a two-run double by Joecken in the third. A bases loaded walk by reliever
Kylie Stober in the fourth made the game 4-0 before a bases-clearing triple to the right-center gap by Riley Ries to give CSU a 7-0 lead.
Indiana State started to mount its comeback the very next inning with an RBI double by
Bailey Martin (2-3, 2B, RBI, SAC) to score
Leslie Sims (2-2). In the sixth, senior
Brooke Riemenschneider (2-4, 2B, SB) stole home on a double steal, and freshman
Becky Malchow (1-2, RBI) took one for the team with an RBI bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.
In the seventh,
Brooke Mann took a leadoff walk and
Erika Crissman (1-4, SB) hit a single through the right side before Riemenschneider ripped one into left to bring Mann in to make the score 8-4. A Sims bunt single loaded the bases for pinch hitter and potential tying run
Gabi Carter, who fought to a 2-2 count before fouling out to third.
Despite the final score, ISU's pitching staff got in a solid day's work. Starter
Kenzie Ihle was charged with the loss and dropped to 9-5 overall on the season, but had three strikeouts in three innings of work that included two wind-aided scoring plays.
Kylie Stober got in some good work as well with two strikeouts and one earned run over the final three innings.
The Sycamores have one day left in Florida with a doubleheader vs. Monmouth (9 a.m.) and Army (11 a.m.) on Wednesday back in Clearwater.
