Sycamores Use Late Rally To Take Down Indianapolis

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Trailing by nine points with just over 11 minutes remaining, the Sycamores needed a spark and got several qualifying contributions down the stretch to take a 79-75 victory over visiting Indianapolis in front of 3,491 fans inside Hulman Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Sycamores improved to 4-5 while Indianapolis is 5-3 on the season.

On the sidelines and honored in pregame ceremonies was 91-years young Duane Klueh, who has his No. 54 hanging in the rafters of Hulman Center and is the all-time winningest head coach in the history of the program. Klueh went 7-1 in his time as a head coach against Indianapolis and said during the game that he only remembers the first one of those eight games -- the loss. Well, now he has a comeback to remember as he returned to the sidelines today for the first time in many years as an honorary coach for the Sycamore program.

A jumper by Eric Davidson with 11:04 to go gave Indianapolis their largest lead of the game at 58-49. Emondre Rickman answered with a jumper in the paint off an offensive rebound before Jordan Barnes connected on one of his career-best seven 3-pointers to trim the Greyhound lead down to 58-54. Trevor Lakes countered with a 3-pointer of his own, but Barnes came back with another to get ISU within 61-57. Tyreke Key hit 1-of-2 free throws to get wihin three points and then Brenton Scott drove the lane with 8:12 remaining to make it a 6-0 run and get the Sycamores within a point at 61-60.

Devin Dixon ended the 6-0 Sycamore run with a free throw out of the under eight media timeout before Key came away with a steal and thunderous fast break dunk at the 6:44 mark which knotted the score at 64. A jumper by former Sycamore Alex Etherington with 4:37 remaining put Indianapolis up 71-67, by Scott came back with a conventional 3-point play to draw Indiana State within a point. Scott then grabbed a big defensive rebound and went the length of the floor for another conventional 3-point play at the 2:35 mark for the 73-71 lead. Tate Hall tied the game seconds later with a pair of free throws with 2:15 remaining.

Scott then buried a huge 3-pointer as the clock ticked under the two minute mark to give ISU a 76-73 lead. Rickman knocked down a pair of charity tosses with 15 seconds left and ISU walked out of the building with a 79-75 victory.

Barnes led the way with 23 points -- marking the third consecutive game that he has gone of the 20-point scoring mark. He did most of his damage behind the 3-point line as he knocked down a career-best seven 3-pointers while adding six rebounds and three assists. Scott scored 13 of his 20 points in the second half as he added seven rebounds. It was the second time in the last three games that he has gone over the 20-point scoring mark. It is also the second time in the last three games that Barnes and Scott have each scored over 20 points in the same game.

Emondre Rickman tallied 11 points and added nine rebounds as he narrowly missed a double-double.

The Sycamores were able to win the game despite being outshot by the Greyhounds. UIndy hit 26-of-56 from the floor for 46.4 percent while ISU was 24-of-57 from the floor (42.1 percent). The Sycamores were able to knocked 42.3 percent of their 3-point attempts -- 11 in total and seven coming from Barnes. ISU controlled the glass by a 38-32 margin and held a 15-3 advantage in second chance points.

Indiana State scored the first three points of the game -- all from Scott as ISU held an early 3-0 advantage. Jesse Kempson gave the Greyhounds a 4-3 lead, but ISU scored the next seven in a row for the 10-4 lead at the 17:18 mark on a 3-pointer from Scott. The Sycamore lead would grow to seven points in the first half when Rickman drained a free throw with 11:08 on the clock to make it 20-13 but Lakes answered with a 3-ponter for UIndy to trim the ISU cushion down to 20-16.

ISU took its largest lead of the first half at 34-26 on a 3-pointer from Barnes with 5:11 to go before the half but the Greyhounds scored the next seven and got within 34-33 with three minutes remaining in the opening stanza. Barnes stopped the bleeding with a 3-pointer and Rickman added a free throw as ISU led 38-33.
