TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State trailed by as many as 17 points late in the first half and used a furious second half rally to go ahead late, but it was visiting Elon that found victory at the final horn, 73-68 inside Hulman Center.
The Sycamores fell to 5-7 on the season while Elon improved to 8-5. It was just the second all-time meeting between the two programs. Indiana State is the only program in the nation this year to play each of the two NCAA Division I schools who have the Phoenix mascot -- splitting games against Green Bay and Elon.
Brenton Scott led the way with 20 points as he hit four 3-pointers while
Jordan Barnes added 18. Barnes added seven rebounds and six assists to his line while Scott tallied six rebounds.
Brandon Murphy led ISU with eight rebounds while
Tyreke Key had seven boards to go with seven points.
Elon attempted 33 3-pointers in the game, hitting 13 of them. ISU tried 29 3-pointers and connected on 10 themselves as the Phoenix recorded a 39.4 mark from distance while ISU hit 34.5 percent. The rebounding battle was dead even at 42 and the Sycamores limited the turnovers to just nine and held an 18-9 edge in points off turnovers.
Dmitri Thompson connected on a 3-pointer with 16:15 to go to push the Elon lead out to 46-34. Barnes hit a second chance lay-up at the 13:26 mark to begin an 11-0 run which ended on a Barnes 3-pointer with 11:45 remaining to get ISU within 46-45.
Matt Deady sparked the run with a steal and conventional 3-point play which made it a four-point game.
Brandon Murphy hit a jumper in the paint off the feed from
Devin Thomas at the 8:03 mark as ISU took its first lead since seconds into the game at 51-50. After a steal by Scott, Thomas rattled one home in the paint and ISU led 53-50. Scott answered an Elon trifecta with one of his own for a 56-53 lead and then Elon scored five in a row retaking the lead for good with a 3-pointer by Seibring at the 5:54 mark for the 58-56 advantage.
A dunk in transition by Thompson with a minute to go helped seal ISU's fate as they took a 70-61 lead. A 3-pointer by Scott with 11 seconds to go got ISU within 72-68, but time ran out after a late Elon free throw as the Phoenix won 73-68.
Scott scored first in the game with a jumper on the opening possessions, but after Barnes connected on a 3-pointer with 17:56 on the clock, Elon scored nine in a row for the early 17-7 lead. Scott would score ISU's next field goal 7:55 later when his jumper drew ISU within 19-11. The Phoenix countered with seven more in a row and a Tyler Siebring free throw with 3:34 remaining in the first half gave Elon their largest lead of the game -- 17 at 30-13. A late first half 8-0 run by the Sycamores was capped by Barnes' 3-pointer with 1:08 to go which drew ISU within 31-26. Dainan Swoope was fouled on a 3-point attempt at the buzzer and hit all three to send Elon into the half with a 37-29 lead.
Four of Elon's starters reached double figures scoring, led by Dmitri Thompson who had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Tyler Siebring added 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The Sycamores have wrapped non-conference play and now turn their focus towards the Missouri Valley Conference slate beginning against league newcomer Valpo on Thursday, December 28 at 7 pm (ET) inside Hulman Center.
