TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Tierra Webb seemingly hit the ground running Tuesday night at the Hulman Center. Maybe that is because in Indiana State's lone home game during an 11-day stretch, she was ready to hit the road again.
Forgive her, because that next road game – Thursday at UIC – is near her native Chicago suburb of Richton Park, Illinois.
Webb led all players with 16 points and was one of five Sycamores to score in double digits as Indiana State routed Missouri S&T, 84-51.
Her prowess on the floor was evident early as she was responsible for almost a third (8 out of 25) of Indiana State's first-quarter points.
By halftime she had 12 points to her credit alongside three rebounds and an assist as the Sycamores took a 51-20 lead into the locker room.
"She was aggressive" Indiana State head coach
Joey Wells said of Webb's performance Tuesday. "We were able to swing the ball and then we would get them into a close out situation. She can get to the rim and she did that tonight. Her shot wasn't falling from behind the arc but she still took good shots, got to the rim and kept us aggressive. When we are aggressive on the offensive end, nothing but good things are going to happen for us."
But it wasn't all Webb for the Trees Tuesday. Ty Battle (15),
Ashley Taia (13),
Maryam Wilcher (10) and Kierra Isaiah (10) also scored double-digit points while
Wendi Bibbins brought down a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Sycamores (2-4) were credited with 19 steals and scored 30 points off turnovers while limiting Missouri S&T (4-2) to a 31.4 percent shooting performance from the field. Isaiah alone was responsible for seven of ISU's 19 swipes.
Tuesday's contest came after the team competed at the Cancun Challenge with a 12-hour travel day back to Terre Haute Sunday.
"We needed this game for a couple different reasons" Wells explained. "The timing and scheduling of it was perfect. We went down over Thanksgiving break [to Cancun] and played two good games, playing good basketball. We didn't win both of them but we played good basketball. But when you take a trip like that, you are always going to come back and have a little let down."
Despite the opportunity for a letdown, ISU rose above. The Sycamores shot 53.8 percent from the field in the first half and allowed all 12 available players to see significant time on the floor.
"Overall, we played well," Wells said. "We shot the ball well. And we did that last week as well. If we can keep the momentum of shooting the ball – taking good shots – moving the ball a little bit, we have a couple games down the stretch where we think we can put a couple wins together."
Now Indiana State will head towards the Windy City – and near Webb's hometown – for Thursday's contest at UIC (2-2). The Flames are coming off a 45-36 loss to Santa Clara on Saturday.
