TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Wendi Bibbins notched a career-high 17 rebounds and two Sycamores posted double-digit points but Indiana State could not overcome a hot-shooting Florida Atlantic squad in a 66-58 loss at the Hulman Center in Terre Haute.
Alexis Delgado (16) and Kierra Isaiah (14) each posted career-high marks in scoring for Indiana State as the Sycamores (0-3) pulled within one possession of Florida Atlantic (1-2) on four separate occasions.
Â
But ISU seemingly embodied the close but no cigar cliché at the Hulman Center Monday night, befitting since the facility does not allow smoking. Keeping the Trees at bay was an Owl squad that shot 40.7 percent from the field and 52.9 from beyond the arc.
Â
"We played hard," Indiana State head coach
Joey Wells said. "But there is a difference between playing hard and competing. At this level playing hard is just not good enough, you have to compete. You have to make things happen and it has to mean something to you. We played hard but we didn't compete every possession."
Â
Bibbins, who led all players with her 17 rebounds, added nine points to her line as she finished just one point shy of a double-double. She tallied four of her nine points in a three-minute stretch in the fourth quarter where ISU cut the Owl lead to only two points.
Â
Fittingly in Monday's game, it was Webb and Delgado that added the other scores during that run to pull within two.
Â
"They definitely made me a proud teammate," Bibbins said of the scoring performances of Delgado and Webb after the game.
Â
But the Owls would respond to that ISU run as Sasha Cedeno and Malia Kency, FAU's two leading scorers, each hit back-to-back threes. Melinda Myers would add a layup to extend the Owl lead to 10 and the Sycamores would miss eight consecutive field goal attempts as Florida Atlantic would pull away.
Â
Cedeno led all scorers with 26 points while Kency added 12 points for the Owls.
Â
Indiana State will now head to the Cancun Challenge in Cancun, Mexico over the Thanksgiving holiday. The Sycamores open play in the challenge on Thursday against Montana at 9 p.m. and then will face South Dakota on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
