Sycamores Take Down Valparaiso in Four Sets on Senior Night

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- It was a Senior Night to remember Saturday night at the ISU Arena as Sycamore Volleyball grew ever closer to clinching their spot in the Missouri Valley Conference Championship in two weeks with a 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 25-17) win over Valparaiso. The Sycamores have not seen action in the postseason since 2014, and first-year head coach Lindsay Allman has her team poised to change that this season.

Four Sycamores recorded double-digit kills as the Sycamores finished their night outhitting the Crusaders, .223 to .170. Junior Laura Gross led the offensive charge for the Trees with a match high 17 kills and 21 digs for her team high 18th double-double.

Freshman Nikkie White added a career high 15 kills in the outing while Cassie Kawa and Sarah Peterson each had 11 for the Sycamores.

Heading into the break tied at one set apiece, ISU took care of business in the third after trailing by as many as four points early. Indiana State showed grit and fought back to tie the set at 14 before outscoring Valpo 11-6 to close out the set and take a 2-1 lead.

Gross and White each tallied four kills apiece in the fourth frame to pace the Sycamores. Indiana State held Valpo to just an .051 attacking percentage in the set, the best of the night as they cruised to a 25-17 win.

ISU's defense was stout throughout, keeping the Crusaders under .100 attacking in two sets and recording eight blocks led by Kawa who finished with five and Rachel Griffin who had four while assisting on 54 Sycamore kills.

Senior libero Stephanie Bindernagel added 16 digs for the Trees in her home finale.

The Sycamores will close out the regular season next weekend with trips to Illinois State and Bradley.
