TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Visiting Loyola came out of the gate on fire and didn't look back as the Ramblers earned an 81-66 victory in front of over 4,000 fans inside Hulman Center.
ISU fell to 7-15, 1-9 MVC while Loyola improved to 16-7, 6-4 MVC.
Brenton Scott and
Everett Clemons led the team with 12 points while
TJ Bell tallied 10 points. Bell paced the team with four rebounds.
The Sycamores struggled from the field in the first half as they hit just 11-of-28 shots from the field (39.3 percent), but torched the nets in the second as they hit 16-of-23 shots (69.6 percent). For the game, Loyola hit 24-of-46 shots (52.2 percent).
Loyola drew first blood with a Maurice Kirby lay-up less than 30 seconds in for a quick 2-0 lead. Bell scored first for the Sycamores as his lay-up at the 18:38 mark cut the Rambler lead down to 4-2. A dunk from
Brandon Murphy got ISU within 11-6 at the 15:06 mark and Bell tried to keep the Sycamores within striking distance was his jumper with just over 11 minutes remaining cut the Rambler lead down to 15-10. Loyola countered with the next six points to a take a double digit advantage until Murphy connected on a free throw with 8:17 on the clock and ISU trailed 21-11.
Aundre Jackson's jumper with 31 seconds left gave the Ramblers a 42-21 lead before Clemons converted the conventional 3-point play with 3.5 seconds to go and ISU trailed 42-24 at the half. Bell's 10 points led the Sycamores at the break.
Demonte Ojinnaka scored first for the Sycamores in the second half as his lay-up less than a minute in cut the Rambler lead down to 44-26. A 7-0 run staked Loyola to a 55-30 advantage with 15:06 remaining before Franklin's lay-up stopped the bleeding and got ISU within 55-32. Milton Doyele answered with a 3-pointer as Loyola went ahead 58-32. The Loyola lead went as high as 29 points at 73-44 with 7:33 on the clock on a pair of Donte Ingram free throws. ISU did score six in a row on buckets from Paige and Clemons to get within 73-50.
The game ended on a 7-0 Sycamores run which began with a lay-up from
Bronson Kessinger as well as
Laquarious Paige.
Donovan Franklin made the final bucket of the game -- a 3-pointer with three seconds to go as Loyola walked out of the building with an 88-61 victory.
Milton Doyle led the way for the Sycamores with 20 points and six rebounds.
Indiana State stays at home for its next game when they host in-state rival Evansville on Wednesday, February 1 at 7 p.m. (ET) inside Hulman Center.
