TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State dropped its third-straight game Friday night at the Hulman Center, falling to Wichita State, 56-42. The Sycamores fell to 10-9 overall and 4-4 in the Missouri Valley Conference while the Shockers improved to 9-10 and 4-4 in MVC play.
Senior forward
Rhagen Smith scored a career high 17 points in the contest to go along with five rebounds, but no other Sycamore recorded double-digits as ISU struggled for offense for much of the night. Junior
Wendi Bibbins seemed to be the only other threat for Indiana State with eight points and 11 rebounds but the Harvey, Louisiana native was held on the bench for much of the game due to foul trouble.
Fouls did not only plague Bibbins, but Sycamore leading scorer
Ashley Taia as well who played just seven first-half minutes. The Brisbane, Australia native could not catch fire, finishing with just four points.
The Sycamores started off on fire, scoring the first eight points of the game before WSU was able to get on the board. The Shockers did not stop fighting, eventually coming back to tie it at 12 late in the quarter. The Sycamores and Shockers continued to battle it out in the second with WSU leading by as many as five points before ISU would make a late run to take a 22-21 lead into the locker room behind 10 points from Smith.
Out of the break it was all Wichita State as the Shockers pounced on ISU out of halftime with an 8-2 run to take a 29-24 run and WSU would not look back. The Shockers would go on to outscore ISU 17-5 in the quarter and the rest was academic.
For the game, Indiana State was held to 28.6 percent (14-of-49) from the field and just three 3-pointers on 18 attempts while the new-look Shockers who played their first game under head coach Linda Hargrove shot 33.3 percent (20-of-60) from the field. The Sycamores were outscored in the pain 32-16 while WSU turned 21 Sycamore turnovers into 19 points.
The Sycamores return to action Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. ET when the Bears of Missouri State come to town. The game will also serve as the annual "We Back Pat" game. Fans are encouraged to wear purple to raise awareness and fight Alzheimer's.
