CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Indiana State women's basketball's four-game winning streak came to an end Friday night in Cedar Falls at the hand of Northern Iowa, 59-47, inside the McLeod Center. ISU fell to 10-7 overall and 4-2 in Missouri Valley Conference action while UNI moved to 14-4 and 7-0 in The Valley.
Ranked 7
th in the Mid-Major Top-25, UNI used an 8-0 run midway through the fourth to create separation after
Maryam Wilcher cut it to a three-point game with a 17-footer. The run included a pair of triples from Ellie Herzberg who led UNI with 23 points on the night.
The Panthers closed out the game at the free-throw line to secure their 10
th-straight win.
The Sycamores were led by
Rhagen Smith who finished with a team high 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Juniors
Wendi Bibbins and
Ashley Taia each added 10 points in the contest. It marked Taia's 13
th double-digit scoring effort of the season.
Coming into the contest, ISU and the Panthers occupied the top two spots in the MVC when it came to defense and they lived up to the bill throughout. Northern Iowa led just 23-20 at intermission and were held to just six field goals in the first 20 minutes of action.
An area that the Panther really took advantage of was the turnovers by the Sycamores. In the game, Indiana State committed 23 miscues which UNI turned into 23 points.
UNI also outrebounded the Sycamores 33-31 in the game, but the Panthers dominated completely dominated ISU on the offensive end, grabbing 15 rebounds to the Sycamores' five. UNI turned those extra chances into 20 more shots than ISU and 14 second-chance points.
The Sycamores return to action Sunday afternoon in Des Moines when they face Drake inside the Knapp Center. The game will air live world-wide on The Valley On ESPN3 and on WIBQ 1230 AM with Luke Martin on the call in the Wabash Valley.
