Sycamore Baseball saw their second selection in the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft today (June 11) when senior Andy Young was picked up in the 37th round by the St. Louis Cardinals. Young is the 1,126th player selected in this year's professional draft.
Young is the 125th player in the history of Sycamore Baseball to be selected to play in the professional ranks. He joins Hunter Owen who earlier was drafted in the 25th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Young becomes the first ever documented selection of a Sycamore by the Cardinals. The first Sycamores were drafted back in 1905.
Andy Young was a All-Missouri Valley Conference Second Team selection at third base for his efforts during the 2016 campaign. In 2015, he was an honorable mention pick by the league office.
He posted a .299 batting average this season for the Sycamores with six home runs and 34 RBI. Young added 16 doubles and three triples with 106 total bases. He led the team and finished fourth in the MVC with 55 runs scored. Young started all 56 of the Sycamores' games at third base. His total of 66 base hits ranks 14th in the league.
Young was named the MVC Player Of The Week on April 4 following a week in which he went 3-for-4 at the plate, knocking in three runs, while hitting his third home run of the season in a 5-4 win over Illinois. Against Butler, Young led at the plate, going 4-for-4, notching a home run, stealing a base and scoring four runs. Over four games that week, Young hit for a solid .526, going 10-for-19 with two home runs, a triple, seven RBI, nine runs scored, two stolen bases and a 1.000 slugging percentage.
The Sycamores recorded a 35-21 overall record this past season as well as a 13-8 mark in MVC contests. Indiana State finished second in the regular season before defeating Wichita State in the 2016 MVC Baseball Championship, which was hosted at Bob Warn Field.
