PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Sycamore Baseball (6-3, 0-0 MVC) dropped their final game of the Snowbird Classic to Villanova (2-5, 0-0 Big East). Despite a ninth inning bases-loaded rally, Indiana State could not push any runs across, falling to Villanova 6-5.
The Sycamores took an early lead in the top of the first, scoring two runs. Senior Andy Young reached on a hit by pitch, sophomore Tyler Friis sacrificed Young to second, and then junior Hunter Owen singled to score Young. The second run came after Villanova's pitcher balked to plate Owen. Villanova would then score six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead.
Indiana State would not score another run until the top of the fifth inning when freshman Dane Tofteland reached on an error then was sent home on a Young RBI. Young would then score on a Friis RBI to cut the Villanova lead 6-4.
The Sycamores scored again in the eighth inning, loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, but could not sneak another run across.
Friis finished 2-for-4 with one RBI, while Young finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Freshman Tyler Ward (1-1) would get the loss on the mound for the Sycamores.
The Sycamores will next travel to Stillwater, Okla. for a three-game series with No. 25 Oklahoma State beginning Friday at 5:00 p.m. EST.
