OMAHA, Neb. – A year ago, Omaha eked out a one-point win in Terre Haute, but this time around they ran away with it from the start, 72-45 inside Baxter Arena Friday afternoon in Omaha.
Ashley Taia and
Rhagen Smith paced Indiana State (2-3) with eleven points each. Smith, a Sullivan, Indiana native, also finished with nine rebounds, including four on the offensive end.
Regan Wentland added seven points off the bench for the Sycamores.
After jumping out to a 25-9 lead in first quarter, it was all academic from then on for the two squads. Offensively, it was a balanced attack throughout the contest for Omaha who had 10 players score six points or more led by Mikaela Shaw who scored 10 points. UNO's unselfish offense showed in the final box score as they assisted on 18 of the team's 28 field goals.
The Mavericks (2-3) shot a blistering 51.4 percent (18-of-35) from the field including six 3-pointers in the opening half. Five different players for the Mavs knocked down 3-pointers in the first half, including two from Remy Davenport who drained her second trey of the half in the final seconds to push the Omaha lead to 43-21 going into the locker room.
Shaw led UNO's scoring offense in the first half, accounting for eight points on 4-of-7 shooting. All nine players that saw the court for UNO in the first half recorded points.
Omaha was able to close out each of the first two quarters with massive runs to extend their lead. To finish the first, the Mavs closed the quarter on a 9-0 run before ending the second on an 8-2 run. Prior to UNO's first-quarter run, Indiana State trailed by a score of just 16-9.
The Sycamores were outscored by just five points in the second half, 29-24.
Indiana State will close out a five-game road trip Monday night in Charleston, Illinois with they take on Eastern Illinois at 7 p.m. ET inside Lantz Arena.
