Box Score TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State volleyball team saw its season come to a close Saturday night at the hands of Northern Iowa as the Panthers defeated the Sycamores, 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-23) inside the ISU Arena.
The Sycamores finish the season with an overall record of 10-20 and a mark of 4-14 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
Indiana State was led by freshman
Damadj Johnson who finished with nine kills on the nights.
Bree Spangler,
Shannon Murphy and
Melody Burdette closed out their careers Saturday. Spangler finished with six kills on eight digs while Burdette went for four kills and Murphy recorded a team high 22 digs for the Sycamores. Junior setter
Rachel Griffin assisted on 25 of the team's 30 kills.
Northern Iowa (23-8, 14-4 MVC) came into the match with everything to gain from defeating ISU as the Panthers jockey for MVC Tournament seeding. UNI did not budge to start, going on top 9-0 before the Sycamores would come back to within one point at 16-15, but that would be as close as ISU would get as UNI closed out the set easily.
The Panthers would go on to win the match after hitting .193 on the night while ISU was held to just .137. Ami Held led Northern Iowa with 14 kills on 39 attempts. UNI dropped in four service aces on the night with two coming from Heather Hook.
Both Spangler and Murphy etched their names into the Sycamore record book this season after both reached 1,000 career digs earlier this year. They are just the 10th and 11th players in program history to reach the mark. Spangler, a Coldwater, Michigan native also became just the fourth player in program history to record 1,000 digs and 1,000 kills in her career.
