BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana State men's and women's track and field will hit the road once again for Indiana University, where it will partake in the Gladstein Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Gladstein Fieldhouse.
The Sycamores are coming off a solid victory over Illinois State at home for the Coughlan-Malloy Cup, improving to 11-1 all-time in the series that dates back to 2005. The Indiana State men defeated Illinois State by a score of 81.5-63.5, while the women prevailed 78-67 over the Redbirds.
On the women's side, Indiana State currently has three Sycamores ranked within the top-50 on the national performance list: senior sprinter Chidera Obasih in the 60 meter dash (18th, 7.40 seconds), sophomore jumper Jamie Newsome in the triple jump (23rd, 12.45m/40-10.25) and senior thrower Katelyn Rutz in the shot put (35th, 15.16m/49-09.00).
Obasih, this week's MVC Female Track Athlete of the Week, stole the show at last week's dual meet vs. Illinois State. The Brookfield, Wis., senior won both the prelims (7.45) and finals (7.40) on blistering career-bests – the latter of which in finals ranked third nationally at the time and ranks third all-time behind seven-time NCAA Champion Holli Hyche (7.21) and All-American teammate Katie Wise (7.25).
On the men's side, ISU owns six national top-50 marks or times: senior All-American Adarius Washington in the 60 meter hurdles (7.86 seconds), senior and former football tight end Jamar Brown in the shot put (29th, 17.87m/58-07.50), junior All-American David Timlin in the mile (31st, 4:09.22, converted), junior hurdler Marcus Neely in the 60 meter hurdles (39th, 8.01), and long jumpers Scott Schreiber (40th, 7.31m/23-11.75) and Devyn Mikell (43rd, 7.30m/23-11.50).
Washington earned his second-straight weekly honor from the MVC this week following yet another victory in the hurdles this past week at a season-best 7.86 seconds. The surprise for the Sycamore men, though, has been the expedited rise of shot putter Jamar Brown. The Preseason All-MVFC honoree on the Sycamore football team has topped out at 56 and 58 feet in his first two meets since high school – his last performance of 17.87m (58-07.50) already ranking him eighth all-time on ISU's illustrious top-10 list.
Brown will actually get things started for ISU tomorrow afternoon, as competition will begin at 3:30 p.m. with the men's shot put.
