LINCOLN, Neb. – The Indiana State baseball team dropped the second of the two-game series against the Nebraska Cornhuskers by a score of 3-2 at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park. Nebraska, who is receiving votes in the National College Baseball Writers of America poll, improves to 14-6, while ISU drops to 8-9.
The Huskers broke open the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning. Blake Headley got on with a double into the gap in left center and scored on a sacrifice fly from Scott Schreiber. Austin Darby put the exclamation point on the inning, belting a two run homer into the ISU bullpen in right field. After four innings, Nebraska led 3-0.
ISU got on the board in the top of the fifth inning when Manny Estevez led off with a solo home run down the left field line.
The Sycamores rallied to score one run in the eighth inning to bring the score within one. Landon Curry lead-off with a double down the left field line and came around to score on a single by Andy Young.
Trent Lunsford (0-1) started and earned the loss for the Sycamores. Lunsford threw 3.1 innings, allowed five hits, three runs; all earned, didn't allow a walk and struck out two. Ethan Larrison, Jeremy McKinney and Austin Conway pitched in relief, allowing a combined three hits, one walk and four strikeouts over the final 4.2 innings of play.
Young led the way offensively for the Sycamores, going two-for-four with an RBI. Estevez hit his third career home run in the fifth inning, and finished the game one-for-four. Curry was also one-for-four with a run scored.
The Sycamores return to action on Friday, March 20th in Springfield, Mo., as they open the Missouri Valley Conference schedule against the Missouri State Bears. First pitch of the three game series will be at 7:35 p.m. Friday and it will be the first game on 1230 WIBQ AM for Sycamore Baseball in 2015.
