Marshall, Newbolt Set Career-Highs in Sunday Loss to MVC Leading Drake

Box Score

DES MOINES, Iowa  – Indiana State's bench accounted for 49 points with two non-starters setting career-highs as Drake ran away with the game in the final minutes, 76-61, on Sunday afternoon inside Knapp Center. Indiana State moves to 16-10 overall and 6-9 in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Redshirt sophomore Joyea Marshall led with a career-high 17 points and a team-high seven boards. Junior guard Alexis Newbolt also chipped in her career-high 16 points on 6-for-13 shooting including 4 3-pointers to go along with a team-high four assists.

Also setting a career-high was junior guard Kalliste Haskins who had six points on two 3-pointers to go along with a career-high five rebounds.

It was a game that featured 10 ties and six lead changes as the two schools had previously played five-straight contests to 10 point win margins or less. The league leading Bulldogs (18-7, 13-1 MVC) shot 50.9 percent from the field on the afternoon for 48 second half points.

The Sycamores regrouped from a poor offensive outing at UNI on Friday with a 38.2 percent clip from the floor as it was one shy of a season-high with seven 3-pointers (38.9 percent).

They also tabbed 10 team assists led by Newbolt and also featured three dishes from senior guard Travecia Franklin. ISU also added six blocks including a career-high four from redshirt sophomore Kelsey Dirks.

It was a spirited first half, as the two teams went to the locker room tied at 28-28. Indiana State took its largest lead of the first half with a 3-pointer by Cierra Ceazer at the 4:28 to play.

Drake clawed its way back to regain the lead on a Caitlin Ingle 3-pointer. Sophomore forward Rhagen Smith laid in the turnaround jumper with 2:41 to play in the opening frame to extend the Sycamore lead back to three. Smith made her first career start in place of an injured senior forward Racheal Mahan.

DU hit a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left in the first half to tie things up at the break. Their offense continued as it went on an opening 9-0 run to being the second half.

Neither team could get a strong lead in the second half, as it exchanged three ties and a lead change in the final period.

Indiana State was within one, 60-59, with 4:33 to play after Newbolt drained her fourth 3-pointer of the night. But Drake closed out the win on a 16-2 run with the MVC's highest scoring offense kicking into gear.

Indiana State continues on the road with a meeting at Evansville on Friday. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. ET inside the Ford Center.
