TEMPE, Ariz.—Playing once again in the warm temperatures of Arizona, the Indiana State softball team (2-6) fell in a pair of games to Colorado State and No. 19 Arizona State at the Diamond Devil Invitational.
In the first game of the day, the Sycamores led early against Colorado State before falling late.
The Sycamores struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Kassie Brown reached on a fielders choice and stole second base before scoring on an RBI single by sophomore Mary Turitto.
In the bottom of the second inning the Sycamores added to their lead when sophomore Erika Crissman hit an RBI single to score senior Aubre Carpenter who reached on a fielders choice and stole second base to move into scoring position.
The Sycamores improved their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the third when they plated three runs off three hits to extend their lead.
The Rams offense then came to life as they scored four in the fourth and six in the fifth to take a 10-5 lead. The Sycamores tried to respond and did cut into the Rams lead in the sixth but could get no closer as they fell 10-6.
Crissman finished the game 3-3 with three RBI's and a run scored for the Sycamores.
#19 ASU GAME
The second game of the day, starting around 11 p.m. local time, against the No. 19 ranked Arizona State Sun Devils, the Sycamores threatened in the top of the first inning but couldn't score before ASU broke the game open in the bottom half of the first.
Brown led off the game with a walk before Holland and Stone hit infield singles to load the bases with just one out. The Sycamores couldn't push any runs across, however.
ASU came out swinging in the bottom of the first as the first six batters reached base as they scored eight runs off six hits to take an early 8-0, one they would never get back.
The Sycamores were able to get runners on but could never push any runs as they fell by a final score of 14-0.
Indiana State will wrap up play in the DIamond Devil Invitational on Sunday when they play Boise State at 11 a.m. EST.
