SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A hot shooting Missouri State Bears team was too much for the Indiana State women's basketball team to handle, as it fell 74-66, on Sunday afternoon at JQH Arena. Indiana State drops is second-straight game and moves to 10-3 overall and 0-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
The Lady Bears (4-9, 2-0 MVC) went 50.0 percent from the floor in the win, its first in the series since 2011-12 season. The Sycamores committed 16 turnovers in the loss and were outrebounded, 47-29.
Indiana State was led by senior forward Racheal Mahan who dropped in 16 points on 8-for-11 shooting and eight rebounds. Senior forward Jasmine Grier also achieved double-digits with 13 points and senior guard Travecia Franklin added 10 points and a team-high four assists.
Senior guard Stephanie Wittman also added nine points while senior forward Chelsea Small picked four steals and added four points and three assists.
Leading by five in the early going, the Sycamores allowed the Bears came alive as it went on an 11-0 run during the midst of a 5:26 ISU scoring drought. MSU (4-9, 1-1 MVC) took a 44-22 lead at the break as it shot 63.0 percent from the floor and were outrebounded ISU, 27-8, in the first half.
The Sycamores made their best attempt for a comeback late in the second half, as it outscored MSU 44-30 in the final frame. Grier drained a three from the top of the key to cut the deficit to 10, 69-59, with 1:06 to play.
Already playing in the double bonus, Missouri State helped its cause with three free throws in the final 41 seconds and a fast break layup by NiJay Gaines sealed it despite a late three and buckets from Grier and Mahan.
Indiana State did manage to tie a season-high 16 steals which added up to 25 points but shooting just 39.7 from the floor and 21.1 from 3-point range on the afternoon didn't help its offensive woes.
Indiana State returns to Hulman Center for the first time in nearly a month when it host Bradley and Loyola in a weekend MVC series. Tip on Friday versus the Braves is set for 7:05 p.m. ET while Sunday's game vs. the Ramblers is set for 2:05 p.m. ET.
