NORMAL, Ill. – Indiana State senior forward Racheal Mahan scored her 1,000th career point and senior forward Jasmine Grier provided a lift off the bench as Indiana State used a strong second half to defeat Illinois State, 60-36. The Sunday afternoon win moves the Sycamores to a 13-4 overall record and 3-3 mark in Missouri Valley Conference action.
The win marks the first victory inside Redbird Arena for the Sycamores since the 2006-07 season. It's also the fourth time in school history a Indiana State team has held a MVC opponent to 40 points or less since joining the league in 1992-93.
With a free throw at the 13:55 mark in the first half. Mahan becomes the 28th player in school history to reach 1,000 points in her career and the 12th player to combine for more than 1,000 points and grab 500 rebounds.
Mahan finished the game with 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds while Grier came off the bench for 13 second half points to lead the team offensively.
Overcoming a sloppy first half, Indiana State lit it up from the field in the second frame. Grier helped ISU compile a 61.5 percent team field goal clip in the second half and 42.0 percent total overall.
On the boards, Indiana State narrowly edged the Redbirds, 43-39, with seven different players grabbing four boards or more.
ISU combined for 14 assists on the night, the eighth game of the season with 14 dishes or more. Grier and senior forward Chelsea Small paced the team with three assists each. Senior guard Natasha Zurek picked up a game-high five steals and three blocks by Mahan helped ISU post seven on the afternoon.
The Sycamores held the Redbirds to its lowest point total this season and just a 17.3 field goal percentage in the contest.
After coming out of the break leading by two, 18-16, Indiana State used an 18-4 run midway through the second half to extend its lead 13 after five straight points by redshirt junior Cierra Ceazer. Ceazer also came off the bench for nine points to help contribute to 37 non-starter points.
Indiana State returns home to host Drake and Northern Iowa in MVC action. Sunday's contest with the Panthers will also serve as Alumnae Day at Hulman Center.
