Indiana State Women?s Basketball Powers Past Loyola, 64-37

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Senior forward Jasmine Grier came off the bench for 15 points and senior forward Chelsea Small added 10 points to guide Indiana State to a 64-37 victory over Loyola on Sunday afternoon inside Hulman Center. The Sycamores improve to 12-3 overall and 2-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference.

 

Grier went 3-for-6 from beyond the arc and 4-for-7 from the floor on the afternoon, as she also grabbed three rebounds and added a steal and an assist to help ISU improve to 5-1 inside Hulman Center this season. Senior forward Racheal Mahan led ISU with seven boards and also added seven points as she is now 18 points away from scoring her 1,000th career point.

 

All 14 available players for ISU saw minutes in the contest with a total of 12 different players scoring points on the afternoon. Redshirt junior Cierra Ceazer came off the bench for seven points to help non-starters combine for 37 points, two shy of its best performance of the season. Nine different players also saw 10 minutes or more of playing time on Sunday.

 

Indiana State's defense went to work, forcing 30 Loyola turnovers and converted it into 25 points. ISU also dished out a combined 12 assists on 20 made shots with senior guard Travecia Franklin, senior guard Natasha Zurek and junior guard Alexis Newbolt combining for two each. Newbolt also led with two steals in the game, as the team gathered 12 in the win.

 

Sycamores built a 14-point lead before the Ramblers got on the board six and a half minutes into the contest. The Indiana State defense also went to work in the opening frame, forcing 17 turnovers and picking up six steals en route to a 38-13 lead. The 13 points marked a program low for points in a half.

 

Led by Mahan, Indiana State narrowly edged the Ramblers (2-13, 0-4 MVC) on the glass, 38-36. Senior forward Chelsea Small added six rebounds with six points, two blocks and a steal while redshirt sophomore Joyea Marshall grabbed five boards.

 

Hitting the road again, ISU travels to Southern Illinois on Friday and Illinois State on Sunday to continue Missouri Valley Conference play. Both games will be heard live on 1230 AM WIBQ AM while Sunday's game in Normal will be seen live locally on WAWV-TV (ABC).
