Albuquerque, NM- Greggmar Swift and Katie Wise both advanced to tomorrow's final in their respective events on the first day of the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships hosted by the University of New Mexico.
Greggmar Swift placed eighth in the preliminary round of the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 7.69 seconds.
“Swift had a bad deal, as he had the third fastest time, but drew lane one,” said Head Men's Coach John McNichols. “The lane draws are random, so that's the way it goes, but Swift responded well and had a great race. His first two hurdles were a little off, but his last three were nearly world-class touchdowns. He earned a lane for tomorrow's final and that's all that matters.”
Swift placed fifth in his heat, which was won by Arkansas freshman Omar McLeod in a time of 7.57 seconds. Swift will now race in tomorrow's final at 6:20 p.m. (Mountain Time), as he will look to improve upon his fourth place finish from a year ago.
Wise also placed fifth in her heat in a time of 7.25 seconds, but had the sixth fastest time overall to advance to tomorrow's final at 7:10 p.m. (MT).
“It's great to have three Sycamores competing in the finals tomorrow,” said Women's Head Coach Angela Martin. “Katie was great today and very focused. She didn't have a great start, but powered through her race to make finals. She is really excited to have another opportunity to run.”
Both Wise and Swift will be in action tomorrow, as well as Mary Theisen in the shot put at 6 p.m. (MT)
