Women?s Basketball Hangs On For 64-55 Win over SMU

QUEENS, N.Y. – Indiana State women's basketball team extended its win streak to seven games as it held on for a 64-55 win over SMU on Saturday afternoon in the St. John's Chartwell Holiday Classic. The Sycamores improve to 9-1 overall on the season and face No. 25 St. John's in the championship game tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. ET.

 

Senior forward Chelsea Small led ISU with a career-high 20 points and team-high seven rebounds while senior forward Racheal Mahan, redshirt junior Cierra Ceazer and sophomore forward Rhagen Smith each had eight points.

 

Ceazer, who celebrated her 22nd birthday on Saturday, also pulled down six rebounds, including four offensive, and senior forward Jasmine Grier also added seven points and five boards. Senior forward Travecia Franklin dished out a team-high five assists while she and junior guard Alexis Newbolt picked up two steals each.

 

The Sycamores forced 21 turnovers on the afternoon and dished out 14 assists on 23 made baskets. They also limited their turnovers to just 10 and had six combined blocks including two from senior guard Natasha Zurek.

 

On the afternoon, the Sycamores mustered a 33.8 percent clip from the floor and were edged on the boards, 49-45. However, ISU did clean up on the offensive glass, picking up 18 in the win.

 

Indiana State roared out to a 18-1 lead in the first half as Mahan aggressive to the bucket to start the game. Small with the three and forced turnover helped the Sycamore defense held the Mustangs without a field goal until the 11:44 mark in the first half.

 

The Sycamores led by as many as 22 points in the first half, as a Smith bucket underneath helped push its lead to 26-4. Leading by 20 at the break behind 10 points from Small, Indiana State went scoreless for almost four minutes as SMU answered with a 7-0 run.

 

The Mustangs (4-6) got within three on a Kiara Perry with 3:41 to play but the Sycamores went on a 6-0 run with Franklin finding Racheal Mahan on the left block with 3:23 to play. On the next possession, Ceazer found junior guard Alexis Newbolt cutting backdoor to up its lead back to seven.

 

With the shot clock nearing expiration, Zurek found Small open for the 3-pointer at the top of the key as ISU pushed its lead back up to double-digits.

 

SMU was forced to foul in the final 52 seconds, as Indiana State hit five free throws in that span to help secure the 11 point victory.

 

ISU turns around to face the host No. 25 Red Storm tomorrow in the championship game of the St. John's Chartwell Holiday Classic at 2 p.m. ET in Carnesecca Arena. It will be the first ranked opponent the Sycamores have faced since the 2010-11 season.

 

The game will be seen live on ESPN3 and heard on 1230 AM WIBQ in Terre Haute.
