Wittman Posts Career-High 16 Points in 68-58 win over Saint Louis

ST. LOUIS – The Indiana State Sycamores won its ninth-straight road game and sixth-straight game overall as it defeated Saint Louis, 68-58, in Chaifetz Arena on Sunday afternoon. With the win, Indiana State improves to 8-1 on the season.

 

The Sycamores were paced by a career-high 16 points by senior guard Stephanie Wittman who went 7-for-9 from the floor and picked up a career-high five steals on the afternoon. A total of three Sycamores scored in double-figures in the win, with senior Racheal Mahan's 15 points and senior guard Chelsea Small adding 14 points.

 

Senior forward Jasmine Grier came off the bench to score all nine of her points in the second half while sophomore forward Rhagen Smith added six points.

 

Indiana State dished out a combined 18 assists including a game-high four each from Small and senior guard Travecia Franklin.

 

Feeding the ball into the post, Indiana State converted on 36 points in the paint on the afternoon and shot 43.1 percent from the floor including a 50.0 percent clip in the opening frame.

 

Opened up with a 8-0 lead, holding the Billikens (4-5) without a field goal for the first 4:24 of the ballgame. The Sycamores led the entire first half, as SLU would only get within six in the opening frame.

 

ISU led 32-20 at halftime behind Small's nine points and a 50 percent clip from the floor. They stretched their largest lead out to 13 but Saint Louis went on 9-0 run with 14 minutes to play and cut lead down to two, 39-37.

 

Saint Louis took its first lead with 12:07 to play on a Denisha Womack layup. Grier tied it back up with a bucket and a 3-pointer along with Mahan free throws made it a five point ISU lead, 51-46.

 

A Jackie Kemp basket tied the game up again at 54-54 but Indiana State put their foot on the offensive pedal as it went on a 12-2 run to help seal the victory. The Sycamore defense also held the Billikens without a true field goal for the final 4:26 of the contest.

 

The Sycamores were also able to convert on free throws late in the game, including eight in the final 1:34 of the contest.

 

Indiana State will travel to Queens, New York when it takes part in the 7th annual St. Johns Chartwell Holiday Classic on Dec. 20-21. ISU meets SMU on Dec. 20 and will face either the host Red Storm or Auburn on Dec. 21.
