Sycamore Women?s Basketball Drops First Contest of the Season to Stetson

Box Score

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – It was a tale of two halves for the Indiana State Women's Basketball team as it couldn't hold on to a halftime lead to suffer its first loss of the season to Stetson, 62-52, on Saturday afternoon at Hulman Center. Indiana State moves to 2-1 overall on the 2014-15 season.

Senior forward Chelsea Small led the Sycamores with 14 points, but scored all of them in the first half. She finished 5-for-11 from the floor and 3-for-5 from behind the arc to go along with five rebounds and two assists.

Senior forward Jasmine Grier contributed 12 points off the bench, as non-starters added 23 points on the night. Senior forward Racheal Mahan also chipped in 11 points and two blocks as she led the team with eight rebounds.

The Sycamores struggled from the floor, shooting just 30.2 percent from the field (19-for-63) and 25 percent from beyond the arc.

Six different players grabbed four or more rebounds including five from Grier, Small and sophomore forward Rhagen Smith. Smith tied a team-high with three offensive boards and also came off the bench for six points.

Senior guard Natasha Zurek distributed a team-highthree assists, and as a team ISU combined for 13 assists on 19 made baskets.

In the first half, Indiana State's largest lead was just four and took a 30-28 lead into the break. Small hit a three pointer less than four minutes into give ISU a quick 8-5 lead. However, the Hatters (3-0) went on a seven point run to take a four point lead on a Brianti Saunders bucket.

The two teams exchanged five ties and nine lead changes in the first half alone including a pair of free throws by Mahan to give Indiana State a 21-17 lead with 6:48 to play. Stetson tied it up at 25-25 on a C.J. Cottington bucket but Small found her stroke from the arc as she drilled a three with 2:35 remaining the half.

The Sycamores couldn't contain the hot shooting second half Hatters, who opened the second half on a 13-2 run. In the final frame, Stetson shot 52.0 percent from the floor and compiled a 43.6 clip on the night.

A good triple by Grier kept ISU chances alive in the second half, as it cut the Stetson lead down to two with 9:33 left on the clock. A 7-2 run increased the lead back to seven but Grier did it again from 3-point land, keeping Indiana State within two with 6:32 to play.

But that's as close as ISU would get in the game, as the Stetson defense kept the Sycamores off the scoreboard for almost five minutes as time nearly expired.

Indiana State looks to shake the loss on Monday when it host East Tennessee State at 8:05 p.m. ET. The game will follow the Indiana State men's basketball team's 5:30 p.m. ET contest with Austin Peay. Fans who purchase a lower level men's basketball ticket will receive free admission to the women's contest immediately following.
