NORMAL, Ill. – The second-seeded Wichita State Shockers scored twice in the sixth and seventh innings on Thursday, forcing an elimination game with the seventh-seeded Indiana State baseball team behind a 5-0 victory in the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament from Duffy Bass Field in Normal, Ill.
Indiana State (26-24) and Wichita State (37-26) will return to the diamond at Duffy Bass Field for an elimination game on Friday, the winner heading to the MVC Tournament championship game on Saturday. First pitch of Friday's winner-take-all contest is set for 1:30 p.m. (ET). The game can be seen live on ESPN3.com with audio on WPRS AM 1440 and GoSycamores.com.
ISU and WSU were both held scoreless through five innings before the Shockers took the lead in the sixth. Tyler Baker (double) and Casey Gillaspie (single) began the sixth-inning rally before Johnny Coy (sacrifice fly) and Mikel Mucha (single) each drove in runs.
The Shockers would double their lead on a two-out rally in the following inning as Baker and Gillaspie hit back-to-back doubles after a two-out walk drawn by Garrett Bayliff to put Wichita State in front, 4-0. Wichita State added another run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Baker.
The best chance for the Sycamores to score came in the bottom of the first inning as redshirt sophomore Derek Hannahs and senior Robby Ort tallied back-to-back singles with one out in the first inning, but Ort was caught in a rundown before junior Mike Fitzgerald lined out to third base. Indiana State did not bring more than four batters to the plate in any inning on Thursday.
Redshirt sophomore Greg Kuhlman (3-2) started the game for Indiana State, allowing two runs on five hits over six innings with nine strikeouts. The six innings pitched and nine strikeouts for the Iowa southpaw tied career highs that were both posted against Alcorn State on May 12.
Kris Gardner (3-6) pitched a complete game for Wichita State, scattering seven hits over nine innings.
Ort went 2-for-4 in the game, passing Mitch Hannahs for third in career hits at Indiana State. Ort (276) now trails only Ryan Strausborger (279 – 2007-10) and Bob Zeihen (290 – 1985-88) in career hits at Indiana State.
