WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State Shockers scored four two-out runs on Friday night, sending the Shockers to a 4-1 series-opening victory over the Indiana State baseball team from Eck Stadium in Wichita, Kan.
Wichita State improves to 17-14 on the season and 3-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference with the victory while Indiana State drops their fourth consecutive MVC game, falling to 12-12 overall and 3-4 within the league.
Wichita State took the lead in the bottom of the third inning, loading the bases with two outs in the frame. Three-time All-MVC selection Johnny Coy gave the Shockers the lead, lacing a single to center to plate Cody Bobbit and Garrett Bayliff for a two-run WSU advantage.
Indiana State cut the lead in half in the top of the sixth inning, taking advantage of a leadoff two-base error that put senior Robby Ort at second base. Redshirt senior Koby Kraemer bunted Ort to third base with Ort scoring on a wild pitch by WSU's Cale Elam later in the inning. The Shockers answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases with two outs before drawing a pair of bases-loaded walks.
Senior Devin Moore started for the Sycamores on Friday, tossing 6.2 innings while allowing four runs on six hits and five walks. Moore replaced typical Friday-night starter Sean Manaea, who was held out of the game due to a strained muscle in his hip. Manaea is questionable to pitch this weekend against the Shockers. Elam earned the victory for the Shockers, allowing one unearned run and three hits in seven strong innings.
Indiana State and Wichita State play game two of their series at 2:00 p.m. (ET), 1:00 p.m. locally on Saturday. The game can be heard live on WIBQ 98.5 FM.
