- Middle Tennessee State scored eight unanswered runs on Saturday, tallying all
eight of their runs in their final three innings at the plate to earn an 8-1
victory over Indiana State at Plainsman Park on the campus of Auburn
University.
Middle Tennessee (4-2) looked poised to take a lead in the third inning after loading
the bases with no outs, but junior starting pitcher Daniel Peterson started a
1-2-3 double play and forced a flyout to escape the jam.
Indiana State (3-3) took the lead in the sixth inning, as senior Robby Ort and
junior Mike Fitzgerald led off the inning with back-to-back hits, with Ort
moving to third on a single. With two outs in the inning, Ort came across the
plate on a passed ball to put ISU in front, 1-0.
MTSU took the lead with four runs in the bottom half of the sixth, including a go-ahead
three-run home run by Jake Ellison on a full-count. The Blue Raiders would
continue to tack on runs to their lead, scoring three times in the seventh and
once in the eighth.
Peterson (0-1) took the loss on Saturday, allowing three runs over 5.1 innings
with three strikeouts. Ort went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and run
scored while Fitzgerald went 2-for-3. MTSU's Johnathan Frebis (1-0) earned the
win allowing five hits in six innings. Daniel Palo picked up a three-inning
save, allowing just two hits with five strikeouts.
Indiana State closes out their weekend slate with a matchup against tournament-host
Auburn on Sunday. First pitch between ISU and AU is set for 3:00 p.m. (ET),
