BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Felisha Johnson
and Brandon Pounds led the Sycamore contingent at the Indiana Relays Saturday
with Johnson winning the women's invitational weight throw and setting a new
school record in winning the invitational shot put while Pounds the top
collegian in the men's invitational weight throw.
Johnson,
the nation's leader in the weight throw, dominated the event with a winning
distance of 70-feet-10-inches (21.59 meters) which was four-feet better than
Purdue's Dani Bunch (66-feet-9.25-inches). The Sycamore followed that effort
with a school record toss of 58-feet-4.75-inches (17.80 meters) to win the
invitational shot put. Bunch was again second (54-feet-9.5-inches).
Pounds
equaled the nation's best throw in the men's weight throw with a distance of
68-feet-0.5-inches (20.74 meters) in finishing third overall but the top
collegian in the invitational weight throw. Indiana State's Chris Field's was
eighth overall and the sixth collegian at 58-feet-8.5-inches (17.89 meters).
Fields also finished eighth in the invitational shot put with a throw of
53-feet-4.5-inches (16.27 meters).
Greggmar
Swift dominated the 60 meter hurdles as he raced to victory with a time of 7.78
seconds in the finals. Swift had the top time after the semifinals earlier in
the day at 7.84. Adarius Washington finished sixth in 8.04 after running the
seventh fastest in the semifinals at 8.09. Marcus Neely did not advance out of
the semifinals, finishing 15th with a time of 8.49.
Stacia
Weatherford finished fourth in the women's 60 meter hurdles after running 8.60
in the finals. Weatherford ran the third fastest in the semifinals with a time
of 8.61.
Katie
Wise remained undefeated in the 60 meter dash after running the fastest time in
the semifinals of 7.54 seconds. Wise did not run in the finals, however.
“She
was feeling tight before the finals and we didn't want to chance it,” John
McNichols, Indiana State men's track & field coach, said.
Lizzy
Herron ran a personal best 26.06 in the 200 meters to place 10th. Shelby
Higginbottom was sixth in the 400 meters in 47.45 with Demetra Camble 21st in
59.74. Leeann Michl finished 12th in the Invitational 800 meters with a time of
2:15.82. Kalli Dalton ran 2:21.49 in the 800 meters to place 24th with Emily
Cotterman finishing 37th with a time of 2:26.94.
Arqeil
Shaw posted a career best in the 400 meters as he finished third with a time of
49.37 with Brian Martin placing 13th in a personal best 50.44 and Ryan
Henrickson a personal best 51.21 to finish 17th. Corey Hahn was seventh in the
800 meters in 1:55.79 with Michael Steele 17th after a personal best 1:57.39.
Tristan
Selby had a career best effort for the day as he ran 14:48.87 in the 5,000
meters to finish fourth overall.
The
Sycamore women's 4x400 meter relay team of Macey Black, Stacia Weatherford,
Leeann Michl, and Shelby Higginbottom finished in 3:49.11 which put them sixth
in the standings. The men's 4x400 meter relay team of Kevin Piraino, Max
Tuttle, Brad Adams, and Ryan Dickson finished in 3:19.90 which put them ninth
in the standings.
Indiana
State will be in South Bend, Ind., next weekend for the Meyo Invitational.
