WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.
– The
Indiana State women remained undefeated on the season while the men were edged
out in a close battle as the Sycamores battled the Purdue Boilermakers in the 18
th Gene Edmonds Cup Saturday.
The
Sycamore women posted only their second win over Purdue in the 18-year history
of the Cup with an 82-79 victory which was secured through a dominating
performance by the Indiana State 4x400 meter team. Indiana State's only other
win over the Purdue women came in 2003 when the Sycamores won 81-78.
The
Indiana State men also had a close battle with the Boilermakers but lost 81-74.
The Sycamores were looking for their second straight victory over Purdue after
posting an 82-79 triumph a year ago.
Purdue
was able to hold onto the Edmonds Cup with a 160-156 combined score victory,
the closest finish in the 18-year history of the competition.
Freshman
Katie Wise ran an Edmonds Cup record of 7.49 seconds to win the 60 meters after
posting the top time in the preliminaries of 7.54 seconds. Wise broke the
record of 7.50 seconds which was held by Indiana State's Omeiga Keyes and set
in 1996 during the first Cup competition. Kaisha Martin finished second for
Indiana State with a time of 7.70 seconds in the finals after running a
personal best 7.68 in the preliminaries.
Wise
became a double winner as she took the 200 meters with a personal best time of 24.78.
Demetra Camble was second for the Sycamores in 25.29. Macey Black finished second in the 400 meters
(59.20) with Lizzy Herron fourth (1:01.49).
Leeann
Michl was also a winner on the day as she won the 600 meters with a time of 1:33.44
with Stacia Weatherford fourth in 1:35.01. Shelby Higginbottom won the 800
meters in a personal best time of 2:13.69 while Emily Cotterman ran a personal
best 2:24.69 in finishing seventh.
Kalli
Dalton led the Sycamore effort in the mile as she finished fifth in 5:03.76
with Nicole Lucas eighth in 5:12.89. Jessica Zangmeister ran a personal best
10:07.14 in the 3,000 meters to place fourth while Lindy Jones had a personal
best 11:06.78 in finishing 11th overall.
Indiana
State went 2-3-4 in the finals of the 60 meter hurdles with Stacia Weatherford
second (8.66), Carmelia Stewart third (8.75) and Kelly Steffen fourth (9.11).
Jalencia Lemmons was fifth (9.20).
The
Sycamores secured the women's team victory when the team of Macey Black, Stacia
Weatherford, Leeann Michl, and Shelby Higginbottom dominated the 4x400 meter
relay, setting a Edmonds Cup record in winning with a time of 3:45.47. That
mark is also the fourth best in Indiana State history. Purdue was four seconds
slower.
The
Sycamores won two of the six field events. Sycamore teammates Kimyanna Rudolph
and Richelle Kimble each cleared 12-feet-1.5-inch (3.70 meters) in the pole
vault with Rudolph judged the winner with fewer misses. Shalesa Smith was the winner for Indiana State
in the triple jump with a distance of 39-feet-5-inches (12.01 meters) with
Carmelia Stewart second with a leap of 35-feet-0.5-inches (10.68 meters).
Ioanna
Kolsidou was second in the high jump by clearing 5-feet-3.76-inches (1.62
meters) with Rachael Johnson fourth at 5-feet-1.75-inches (1.57 meters).
Carmelia Stewart was second in the long jump with a distance of 18-feet-5.25-inches
(5.62 meters) with Kelly Steffen third with a personal best distance of 18-feet-4.25-inches
(5.59 meters).
Indiana
State was missing one of their mainstays in the weights as Felisha Johnson
missed the meet due to illness. The Sycamores still scored well in the shot put
and weight throw.
Whitney
Walker was third in the shot put with a throw of 42-feet-2.75-inches (12.87
meters) with Dawnielle Passmore fourth with a distance of 42-feet-0.76-inches
(12.82 meters). Passmore was also second in the weight throw with a distance of
49-reet-5.75-inches with Katelyn Rutz placing third at 47-feet-1-inch (14.35
meters).
Indiana
State won three track events on the men's side.
Greggmar
Swift established a personal best as he soared to victory in the 60 meter
hurdles with an Edmonds Cup record time of 7.72 seconds. Swift broke Aubrey
Herring's record of 7.79 seconds set in 2000 and the Lambert Fieldhouse record
of 7.76 set by Ricardo Melbourne of Central State in 2003. Duane Brown was fourth
in 8.08.
John
Mascari surged to victory in the final 100 meters to win the mile with a time
of 4:14.70 while Taylor Head was fifth in 4:19.45. The other victory came in the
3,000 meters as Dustin Betz dominated the final two laps to post the victory in
8:33.35. Tristan Selby was fourth in 8:40.97.
Shaun
Smith ran a personal best 6.89 to capture the 60 meter dash finals after
running 6.94 in the prelims. Justin Baxtron was fifth in the 60 meters with a
time of 6.99 seconds but came back to finish third in the 200 meters in 22.07.
Ray Humphrey was 10th in the 200 meters in 23.59.
Arqeil
Shaw was second in the 400 meters (49.79) with Kevin Piraino fourth (49.97)
while Jonathan Jackson was second in the 600 meters (1:20.72) and Michael
Steele sixth (1:23.37). Brad Adams was second in the 800 meters (1:55.32) with
Corey Hahn third (1:55.39).
The
Sycamore 4x400 meter relay team of Max Tuttle, Kevin Piraino, Ryan Dickson, and
Jonathan Jackson finished third in the event with a time of 3:19.95.
Indiana
State also won two of the six field events as Brett Wehmiller won the long jump
with a personal best distance of 22-feet-5.25-inches (6.84 meters) and Robert
Webb won the triple jump with a personal best leap of 47-feet-3.5-inches (14.41
meters). Webb was also second in the long jump with a personal best leap of 21-feet-4-inches
(6.50 meters) and Kevin Piraino finished third in the triple jump at
40-feet-1.5-inches (12.23 meters).
Webb
was also second in the high jump after clearing 6-feet-4.75-inches (1.95 meters)
with Wehmiller third in clearing 6-feet-2.75-inches (1.90 meters). The
Sycamores failed to score in the pole vault.
Chris
Fields was second in the weight throw with a toss of 61-feet-11.75-inches
(18.89 meters) with Brandon Pounds making his first appearance of the indoor
season and finishing third with a distance of 61-feet-1.25-inches (18.62
meters). Derek Bunch led the Sycamore effort in the shot put by finishing sixth
at 52-feet-10.75-inches (16.12 meters) with Fields 10th at 49-feet-3.75-inches
(15.03 meters).
The
Sycamores will compete at Indiana University next Friday and Saturday.
