HAUTE, Ind. - Senior Ryan Walterhouse gave the Indiana
State baseball team their first win of the season when trailing heading into
the ninth inning, sending a one-out two-run home run of the left field wall as
the Sycamores topped the Nebraska Omaha Mavericks on Friday, 2-1.
The Sycamores improved to 33-10 overall with their fourth straight win, their
first victory in eight games when trailing after eight innings. The Mavericks
fell to 11-31 on the season.
UNO senior Andrew Reck shut down the ISU offense over seven strong innings,
allowing just three hits. Junior Dakota Bacus was just as good for Indiana
State, striking out eight batters in eight innings.
Maverick sophomore Caleb Palensky broke the scoreless tie in the sixth inning,
sending the first pitch of his at-bat with Bacus over the right field wall for
a one-out solo home run.
Indiana State's rally in the ninth began with a one-out walk by senior Jon Hedges, before junior Jordan Pearson pinch-ran at first base. Walterhouse
provided the heroics, sending a 2-1 pitch from Curtis Smith just over the left
field wall for the walkoff win. The home run was Walterhouse's fifth of the
season.
It is the second walk-off win of the season for the Sycamores, joining senior
Kyle Burnam's RBI single against Houston Baptist during the 2012 Irish Classic.
ISU and UNO play game two of their series at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. The
Sycamores will send sophomore southpaw Sean Manaea (4-1, 3.33 ERA) against junior
right-hander Matt Tew (1-4, 5.57 ERA) for the Mavericks.
