WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State used a sizable advantage at the free throw line and a trio of second half runs to earn a 71-66 victory over Indiana State in front of a sell out crowd at Charles Koch Arena as well as a national television audience on ESPN2.
ISU had its three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 14-10, 5-8 MVC. Wichita State improved to 20-4, 11-2 MVC.
Wichita State scored 64 of its 71 points either in the paint or at the free throw line.

ISU
limited the Shockers to just 23-of-56 shooting (41.1 percent), but could not
overcome an 24-of-30 performance for WSU at the free throw line. Conversely,
the Sycamores hit just 10 free throws on 16 attempts at the free throw line.
Wichita State hit just one 3-pointer in the game, not connecting from long range until less than two minutes to go when Ben Smith hit one a death of the shot clock.

Lucas Eitel proved to be huge in the final five minutes of the first half as he hit a 3-pointer with 2:41 on the clock to stake the Sycamores to a 29-25 advantage. A pair of Garrett Stutz free throws with 44 seconds left cut the ISU lead down to 29-27. After the Sycamores suffered a turnover, they got a defensive stop and and inadvertant whistle by official Verne Harris with 3.4 seconds left gave the Sycamores the ball and the length of the court to go.
Jake Odum took the inbounds ball and used most of the court to race down with 28 feet of the basket where he rose up and drilled a 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded to give the Sycamores a 32-27 halftime lead.
Dwayne Lathan hit a jumper just inside the 3-point line with 17:42 on the clock as ISU was able to maintain its halftime margin with a 36-31 lead. The Shockers came roaring back with the next 10 points to take a 41-36 lead on a tip-in by Ben Smith with 13:48 to go which forced the Sycamores to use a timeout.
Odum then buried a trey and Richard rattled home a jumper to knot the game at 41 all with 12:27 remaining in the game. The Shockers took control by scoring the game's next eight points for a 49-41 cushion until Lathan scored 9:50 to to make it 49-43. Odum then hit a jumper as the shot clock sounded a few moments later to cut the Wichita State lead down to 49-46.

After a defensive stop, ISU made it a 5-0 run with a conventional 3-point play by Walker with 5:41 left to trim the lead down to 56-51.
The WSU lead stayed at five as the teams traded buckets but ISU got a stop and a Richard jumper with 4:30 remaining to cut the Shocker lead down to just 58-55. Stutz scored inside to answer and run its lead back out to 60-55 as the clocked ticked down towards four minutes remaining.
Ben Smith hit Wichita State's first 3-pointer of the game with just under two minutes left in regulation to stretch their advantage out to 65-56, but Carl Richard drained a triple to move him into double figures scoring with 1:08 remaing to make it 65-59.

McWhorter would connect on a short putback lay-up with six seconds left to answer a pair of Stutz free throws to trim the WSU lead down to 70-66.
