- The offense came alive on Saturday for the Indiana State baseball team as the
Sycamores pounded out 37 hits and scored 29 runs in sweeping a doubleheader at
the 2012 Bulldog Classic. ISU came away with a 17-2 victory in game one over
Maryland Eastern Shore before coming back with a 12-0 shutout win over Alabama
A&M.
The wins move ISU to an even 3-3 on the season.
Game One
Indiana State did not waste any time in game one, scoring seven runs in the
first inning and six more in the second. Junior Jeremy Lucas drove in the game's
first run with a single to left field to bring home freshman Landon Curry.
Senior Jon Hedges (two), senior Lucas Hileman (one), Curry (one), redshirt
junior Koby Kraemer (one) and junior Robby Ort (one) all tallied RBIs in the
opening frame.
Sophomore southpaw Sean Manaea (1-1) led the pitching staff, striking out 10
batters in six innings of work. Junior Tyler Fehringer and redshirt freshman
Tyler Pazik combined for the final two innings, allowing just one hit.
Curry reached base in all six of his trips to the plate, going 3-for-6 in game
one, while scoring four runs and stealing a pair of bases. Lucas led ISU with
three RBIs for the game, with Kraemer, junior Jordan Pearson, Ort and Hedges
all driving in a pair.
Indiana State's 17 runs are their most since a 17-4 road victory over Indiana
on March 28, 2010.
Game Two
The Sycamores employed a steady offensive attack in game two, scoring runs in
six of their nine innings.
Indiana State took the lead in the first inning, when Lucas knocked a two-out
single to left field to plate Kraemer. Lucas and Kraemer both picked up RBIs in
the third as ISU stretched their lead to 3-0.
The Sycamores would score two more runs in both the fourth and sixth innings,
one in the seventh and four in the ninth to pick up their second shutout
victory in three games.
Junior Ryan Torgerson (1-0) earned the victory, allowing just two hits with
seven strikeouts in seven innings. Redshirt sophomore Tyler Browning and junior
Devin Moore closed out the game, each striking out one batter in one inning on
the mound.
Kraemer led the offense in game two, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs and three
runs scored. Curry scored four runs for the second straight game, while Ort
picked up three RBIs at the plate.
Over the doubleheader, Curry reached base in 11 of his 12 trips to the plate
and scored eight runs. Saturday's doubleheader was the first time this season
that Curry has hit in the leadoff position.
Indiana State looks to sweep its four games at the 2012 Bulldog Classic on
Sunday, when the Sycamores take the field against Alabama A&M at 4:00 p.m.
