TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State sophomore guard Jake Odum poured in a career-high 34 points for the Sycamores as they used overtime to down Illinois State, 83-77 in front of 4,963 fans inside Hulman Center.
The Sycamores won for the fifth consecutive time at home against Illinois State to improve to 16-11, 7-9 MVC while the Redbirds fell to 16-11, 8-8 MVC. ISU also won its second overtime game in a row this season.
Odum's career-high 34 points are the most by a Sycamore since Marico Stinson had 37 on December 30, 2006 against Drake. He went 8-of-12 from the field and was 17-of-21 from the free throw line. He added seven rebounds and seven assists in 37 minutes of action.
Carl Richard scored nine points to become the 34th member of the Indiana State 1,000-point club when he hit a pair of free throws in the second half. He added five rebounds and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
Myles Walker added 16 points and tallied seven rebounds as he went 7-of-9 from the field while Jordan Printy posted 15 points in the game, hitting 4-of-6 attempts from 3-point range. Printy is now 10-of-12 in the last two games from long range.
Odum knotted the game for the ninth time with a free throw at the 1:27 mark of regulation and gave the Sycamores a 69-68 lead with the second make. Illinois State led 64-58 with 4:51 to go but Odum would hit a pair of free throws and Walker converted a lay-up to inch the Sycamores within 64-62.
Nic Moore hit a 3-pointer to run the Illinois State lead out to 67-62 with 3:33 left, but Walker scored again in the paint to make it 67-64. Printy tied the game at 67 with 2:13 to go with a 3-pointer.
After Odum gave the ISU a 69-68 lead Illinois State's Tyler Brown dribbled the ball out of bounds with 1:04 left and Odum hit a jumper with 36 seconds left to lift the Sycamores ahead 71-68. Moore answered with a lay-up at the 27 second mark to cut the Sycamore advantage down to 71-70 before Richard hit a pair of free throws with 13 seconds left to stretch the lead out to 73-70.
Anthony Cousin drilled a trey with 10 seconds left to knot the score at 73 before Odum was fouled with on a jump shot with 1.9 seconds left. Odum was unable to hit either and the defensive rebound went down to Jordan Threloff who heaved a full court over the shoulder desperation shot that banked off the back board and then the front of the rim to send the game to overtime.
Odum hit 1-of-2 free throws with 4:11 left in the extra period for a 74-73 lead before Illinois State missed a pair of point blank shots and Printy grabbed the rebound. Walker scored off the feed from Steve McWhorter for a 76-73 lead with 2:50 to go.
Cousin then missed a 3-pointer, but Richard hit his on the other end as the Sycamore lead was extended to 79-73 with 1:50 left.
Tyler Brown hit a pair of charity tosses with 1:20 to go to make it a four-point game, then the Redbirds got a stop and Jackie Carmichael scored with 33 seconds left to trim the Indiana State lead down to 79-77.
Odum hit a pair of free throws to answer with 21 seconds left for a four points lead and Moore missed a shot with 16 seconds left that Walker hauled in. Odum was fouled with 10 seconds left to put Indiana State ahead 83-77 before the Redbirds turned it over to end the game.
Illinois State led 32-28 at the half despite 13 early points from Odum. The Redbirds connected on 61.9 percent of their shots before halftime while the Sycamores were limited to just 38.5 percent shooting before the break.
The Redbirds were led in scoring by Moore who poured in 16 points.
Indiana State returns to action on Saturday, February 18 when they travel to in-state rival Butler for the SEARS Bracketbusters event. Tip-off is set for 2:05 p.m. (ET) and will be televised locally on WAWV-TV.
