TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State's Anna Munn scored a game-high 14 points and
Rachael Mahan added a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds as the
Sycamores scored a 51-39 exhibition victory over Bellarmine tonight (Nov. 2) in
front of 2,055 fans inside Hulman Center.
"In the second half defensively, we were much better there
than we were in the first half," head coach Teri Moren said. "We had
a lot of great open looks, we just could not get them to fall tonight. We have
a goal of 15 or less turnovers a game, and we accomplished that and with 55
rebounds, I thought we did a tremendous job on the boards in the game."
Munn connected on four 3-pointers in the game to score her 14
points and added five rebounds, three assists and two steals in 33 minutes of
action.
Mahan made the most of her 32 minutes by scoring 13 points and
pulling down 13 rebounds while adding six blocked shots and five steals.
"Racheal did a tremendous job in both halves," Moren
said. "We really challenged the team to up their defensive intensity in
the second half and I thought we did that."
The Sycamores finished the game with just a 26.1 shooting
percentage, but they owned a decisive 55-42 margin on the glass and forced
Bellarmine into 21 turnovers, which they converted into 14 points. The Indiana
State defense also recorded eight blocks and 15 steals in the contest.
ISU limited the Knights to just 29.2 percent shooting for the
game.
Mahan would score the first of her 13 points just 45 seconds into
the game for a quick 1-0 lead on a free throw, before falling behind 12-7 with
14:36 left in the first half. The Sycamores would go on to score the game's next
six points, capped by a Taylor Whitley lay-up at the 9:52 mark for the 13-12
advantage.
The visitors went on a 7-0 spurt to take their largest lead of the
game at 19-13, but Munn hit her first 3-pointer of the contest to get ISU
within 19-16 with 5:56 left before intermission. Kasey Johnson added a lay-up
to cut the Knight lead down to 19-18 and a Mahan lay-up with 3:44 on the clock
put the Sycamores ahead 22-21.
Munn added a basket on the Sycamores' next possession to make it
24-21 in favor of ISU, as the defense would allow just two points to the
Knights in the final four minutes of the opening stanza. The Sycamores closed
the half on a 13-2 run, when another Munn triple hit the bottom of the net with
three seconds remaining to send ISU to a 31-23 halftime cushion.
Munn began the second half just as she finished the first with a
3-pointer to stretch the lead out to 34-23 on the Sycamores' first possession
out of the break. Franklin would add a lay-up at the 12:46 mark to up the Sycamore
advantage to 37-24 with 12:46 to play.
The Sycamore defense allowed just one point over the first 8:16 of
the second half before Lauren Jones drained a 3-pointer with 12:16 to go to cut
the cushion down to 37-27.
Indiana State's lead grew to 43-30 with 7:45 left on a lay-up by
Jessica Valley, but the Knights would score the game's next seven points over a
four minute stretch as ISU found itself up only 44-38 with four minutes to go.
Munn but the game out of reach with 3:17 to play on her fourth
3-pointer of the game and Whitley added a pair of free throws as the advantage
ballooned back out to 49-38 with two minutes to go.
Bellarmine would cut the lead down to 49-39, but Marina Laramie
hit a pair of free throws in the final minute for the 51-39 victory.
Betsy Goodin was the lone Knight to reach double figures scoring
as she scored 10 points off the bench.
The Sycamores will open the regular season on
Friday, November 9 when they host Eastern Illinois at 7:05 p.m. (ET) inside
Hulman Center.
