HAUTE, Ind. - Drake senior Rachael Hackbarth led the
visiting Drake Bulldogs to a 67-59 road Missouri Valley Conference victory on
Sunday afternoon in Terre Haute, scoring 24 of her career-high 32 in the second
half as the Bulldogs rallied from an eight-point second-half deficit.
The loss is the third straight for the Sycamores, moving their record to 10-9
overall and 4-3 in the MVC. ISU's three-game skid is their longest under
second-year head coach Teri Moren in her two years in Terre Haute. The win
improves the Bulldogs to 10-8 on the season, 4-3 in league play.
The lead changed hands seven times early in the first half, with Indiana State
taking control late to secure a 31-28 advantage at the half.
Senior Brittany Schoen led the Sycamores in the first half, going 3-for-5 from
beyond the three-point arc and 2-for-2 at the charity stripe for 11 points.
Freshman Racheal Mahan played 14 minutes off the bench, scoring eight
first-half points. As a team, ISU shot 46.2% (12-for-26) from the field in the
opening 20 minutes of action.
Indiana State took their largest lead of the game with 10:52 to play, using a
7-1 run to take an eight-point lead, at 49-41. Senior Deja Mattox capped the
run, knocking down a step-back trey with the shot clock running down.
Drake followed Mattox's three-pointer with a 13-0 run of their own, turning ISU's
eight-point lead into a five-point deficit, at 54-49, with 5:26 remaining.
Hackbarth scored nine of Drake's 13 points during the decisive run. Drake took
the lead on a jumper by Hackbarth with 6:52 to play, their first lead since
holding a 12-11 advantage with 12:38 remaining in the first half.
Indiana State fought back and got within two points twice in the closing
minutes, but could never regain the lead or tie the game again as Drake hit
their last nine free-throws and scored on five straight possessions to end the
game.
Schoen led ISU with a season-high 16 points, struggling after her strong start
to finish just 5-for-15 from the field and 4-for-13 from long range. Mahan
posted a career-high 12 points with five rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench,
as senior Shannon Thomas battled foul trouble all afternoon. ISU's senior
center played just 15 minutes, posting four points and going without a rebound
for the first time in her career. Mattox was the third Sycamore to reach double
figures, adding 11 points with nine in the second half.
Hackbarth finished the game with 32 points and 14 rebounds, going 10-for-17
from the field and 12-for-15 from the free-throw line. Sophomore Morgan Reid
joined her teammate with a double-double, with 10 point and 11 boards.
Drake held a large advantage at the charity stripe, turning 23 ISU fouls into a
28-for-34 (82.4%) effort at the line. Indiana State by comparison went 9-for-16
(56.3%) at the line on Drake's 16 fouls.
The Sycamores begin the road-heavy stretch of their MVC schedule next weekend,
as ISU plays five of their next seven games away from Terre Haute and Hulman
Center. ISU's three-game road swing begins with a trip to Missouri State on
Friday, Jan. 27.
