TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State battled league-leading Wichita State close deep into the second half but the Shockers were able to knock down key late 3-pointers to earn a 75-65 victory over the Sycamores in front of 6,410 fans inside Hulman Center.
The loss drops Indiana State down to 11-7, 2-5 MVC while the Shockers stayed unbeaten on the road and improved to 15-3, 6-1 MVC.
Indiana State was led in scoring by 17 points by Dwayne Lathan, who hit 7-of-11 shots from the field to go with three rebounds and one blocked shot. Carl Richard reached double figures scoring with 13 points and added eight rebounds as he crept closer to the eighth spot in the Sycamore career rebounding Top 10.
The Sycamores out-rebounded the Shockers by a 42-36 margin, led by senior Myles Walker who tallied 14 boards, which was the most by a Sycamore since Richard had 14 in 2010 at Green Bay.
Jake Odum scored six points and had five rebounds to go with eight assists and three steals.
Walker got the Sycamores on the board with a put-back dunk less than a minute into the game and RJ Mahurin hit a trey on the Sycamores' next possession for a quick 5-0 advantage.
An Odum lay-up at the 11:01 mark knotted the score at 15 before the Shockers went on a 7-0 run to take a 22-15 lead just two minute later. Odum hit 1-of-2 free throws with 2:23 on the clock as ISU trailed just 28-26, but the Shockers scored the final eight points of the first half to go into the break with a 36-26 lead.
The Sycamores would battle the Shockers tough in the second half as they used a 5-0 spurt five minutes into the second half and Odum hit a pair of free throws with 14:36 to go which left ISU down just 44-40.
Wichita State ran the lead back out to nine points at 49-40 with 13:22 to go, before ISU answered with a trey from Printy, and back-to-back buckets by Jake Kitchell and Richard as the Shocker advantage stood at jut 51-49 with 11:17 to go.
Dwayne Lathan hit a jumper with just under four minutes to go to cut the Shocker lead down to just 60-58 but Ben Smith hit back-to-back 3-pointers, including a four-point play as WSU led 67-58 with 2:10 on the clock.
ISU would get as close as six points twice in the final minute, including 71-65 with 39 seconds left when the Shockers turned the ball over against the ISU press. Odum just missed a triple with 35 seconds left and Wichita State hit four free throws down the stretch to take the 75-65 victory.
Toure' Murry and David Kyles led the Shockers with 16 points each while Smith had 10.
The ISU defense held the Shockers to just 40.4 percent shooting from the field (21-of-52), while the Sycamores hit 38.1 percent (24-of-63). ISU owned a 28-16 advantage in the paint while the Shocker bench scored 29 points.
ISU returns to action on Wednesday, January 18 when they travel to Illinois State in a game that will be televised on FSN Midwest as well as ESPN3. Tip-off is slated for 8:05 p.m. (ET).
